Yankees acquire first baseman Garrett Cooper from the Brewers in exchange for LHP Tyler Webb

On the day where the Cubs made a blockbuster deal to acquire Jose Quintana from the White Sox, The Yankees have officially made their first splash in the 2017 Trade Deadline by acquiring minor league first baseman Garrett Cooper in exchange for LHP Tyler Webb. The initial report on Webb's departure came courtesy of Ken Rosenthal, while who would come back in the trade came from Jeff Passan.

Garrett Cooper is a 6'6" first baseman that was drafted in the sixth round of the 2013 draft out of Auburn University. He has played his whole Minor League career in the Brewers' system and has a career .305 average and .370 OBP in his pro ball tenure. This season Cooper is absolutely raking at Triple-A, as he is hitting .366 with 82 RBIs and a phenomenal 1.080 OPS in only 75 games. It was reported that he will be assigned to Triple-A.

Tyler Webb was one of the few Yankee relievers who didn't pitch horrendously over the past month. Webb, 26, pitched solid in Triple-A with a 3.24 ERA in 21 appearances. His 4.50 ERA for the Yankees this season is nothing special, but he has flashed signs of being able to be a solid left handed reliever. The trade of Webb also frees up a spot on the 40-man roster.

While not being a major trade, both teams acquired young players for spots on the team with a glaring hole. The Brewers really needed another southpaw in their pen and gave up a player that really was not apart of their future plans in order to acquire him. The Yankees bullpen has been subpar, however, Webb was expendable especially for a first baseman that has been making Triple-A pitching look foolish. Ji-Man Choi and Austin Romine will likely handle the majority of first base duties for now, but there is no chance the Bombers keep Cooper in Scranton, if he continues to mash.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason.
