Yankee fail to execute with RISP and drop game late in 4-2 loss in Minnesota

The Yankees opened up a three-game set against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field after splitting a four game series against division rival Boston Red Sox. Now entering their second series of a long 11 game road trip, the Yanks were looking to get on track by winning their first series since June 11th back in the Bronx when they swept the Orioles. After being shutout last night, the Yankees were once again held in check on Monday night in a 4-2 loss that ended with a late Twins rally.

The Yankees sent Bryan Mitchell to the mound who looked shaky at first, but finished strong giving the Yankees five solid innings while only giving up two runs. Yet, it could have been much worse if it wasn’t for the arm of Aaron Judge where in the bottom of the third he gunned down Brian Dozier while he was attempting to score on what would have been a sacrifice fly.

The Twins tacked on the first run of the game in the bottom of the second thanks to an Eddie Rosario double. They would later score their second run in the bottom of the third due to a bad error by Mitchell after he dropped the ball while covering first base. This was directly after Judge hosed down Dozier at home the play before.


The Yankees wouldn’t score their first run until the top of the fifth, thanks to back-to-back two-out doubles, first by Garrett Cooper, and then by Austin Romine. The lead was now cut to 2-1.


Two innings later, the Yankees tied the game up on another double by Cooper which would score Chase Headley. The Yankees then had a prime scoring opportunity in the top of the eighth inning after Clint Frazier led off the inning with a double. The Twins then walked Judge intentionally, and Holliday grounded into a double play. Still, the go-ahead run was on third with two outs, and the Twins then elected to intentionally walk Starlin Castro. However, Didi Gregorius inexplicably laid down a bunt with two-outs and was thrown out at first to end the Yankee threat.

The tie would not hold long as the Twins would get a run back in the bottom of the eighth of a pinch-hit RBI single from Eduardo Escobar. Eddie Rossario would double up the Yanks with another RBI double, extending their lead to 4-2.

The Yankees were unable to rally against All-Star closer Brandon Kintzler as he set the Yankees down in the top of the ninth to secure the 4-2 victory. One silver-lining in this game was the play of Clint Frazier, who hit the ball hard all night and really showed a lot of hustle and speed on the basepaths.

The Yankees will send Luis Cessa to the hill tomorrow against Bartolo Colon as they will look to win the final two games and finally win a series.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason.
