Aaron Hicks and Tyler Austin to begin rehab assignments after the Yanks homestand

With July coming to an end, the Yanks are starting to get some pieces back from the DL. All-Star second baseman Starlin Castro will hopefully return sooner rather than later with his nagging hamstring injury. Now, outfielder Aaron Hicks and first baseman Tyler Austin will be set to begin their rehab assignments in the minors after the Yankees current homestand.

Getting Hicks back in action would be huge, as he was putting up All-Star-like numbers before his injury. Hicks rebounded from his miserable 2016 season and had started getting everything together. His three-for-25 slump brought his average from .314 down to .290 as well as his slugging from .571 to .515. For the season though, he still has hit ten homers, 37 RBIs, seven stolen bases, and a still impressive slash line of .290/.398/.515 across 200 ABs. His stellar defense has also been a vital part of his breakout season and his 2.8 WAR was amongst the top five in the AL before he went down. Despite all the time missed, it still somehow ranks 21st in the AL.
Austin had a solid start to his career last season in the Bronx with five homers including homering in his first career AB. Austin really had a chance to take the starting spot at first earlier this season with the struggles of Chris Carter and the injuries to Greg Bird. Austin came back after missing the first few months only to get injured again. He went two-for-13 (.154) in his brief stint before injuring his right hamstring. He also added a homer and two RBIs in limited action. His power would make the depth of this Yankees offense even better.

The only problem with Hicks returning is it likely means Clint Frazier will get sent back down to Triple-A despite his energetic play so far. The dream scenario would be to somehow get rid of Jacoby Ellsbury and his lofty contract which would allow the Yanks to carry their four best outfielders of Aaron Judge, Hicks, Brett Gardner, and Frazier. At this point, that’s highly unlikely though. As for Austin, he will likely replace Garrett Cooper as the backup first baseman. With the assignments not starting until next week, it'll still be a few weeks before Hicks and Austin return to big league action.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason.
