MLB trade rumors: Yankees “deep into discussions” with Twins about LHP Jaime Garcia

Despite being traded earlier this week from the Braves to the Twins, the Yankees are reportedly “deep into discussions” with the Twins on a deal to send left-hander Jaime Garcia to the Bronx, per Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports.

The Twins recently announced that they would become deadline sellers just days after buying Garcia from the Atlanta Braves. Garcia has only made one start with the Twins which came on July 28 where he went 6.2 innings allowing eight hits and three runs while walking three and striking out seven.

This season, Garcia, who just turned 31 on July 8, is 5-7 with a 4.29 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, and .255 BAA between Atlanta and Minnesota. He also turns in a respectable 4.01 FIP suggesting his ERA is higher than it should be. He is a rental who is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, but the Yankees could look to resign the lefty when Michael Pineda, CC Sabathia hit free agency, along with the possibility that Masahiro Tanaka opts out. 

 As a rental, Garcia’s price is not as high as it could be, but he may not be a cheap option. The Twins sent prospect Huascar Ynoa to Atlanta in the Garcia deal, and Ynoa is not in the Braves’ top 30 prospects per MLB Pipeline. 

MLB.com’s Jon Morosi reports that the Twins like the Yankees’ no. 22 prospect Zack Littell, who was a healthy scratch from his most recent start in Double-A Trenton. The Yankees acquired Littell from the Mariners in the James Pazos trade. In his first year in the Yankees’ system, Littell is 14-1 with a 1.87 ERA in 20 appearances (18 starts) between High-A Tampa and Double-A Trenton. He also has a 1.08 WHIP and is striking out 8.5 batters per nine innings pitched.

One interesting note here is that Passan also reports that the pursuit of Garcia would not take the Yankees out of the Sonny Gray market. The Yankees have been actively pursuing Gray and could strike a deal with the Athletics for him in the next 24 hours. This makes sense, as Jordan Montgomery is likely on an innings limit to protect his young arm, and the Yankees could also limit Luis Severino’s innings this season. The Yankees could also look to go with a six-man rotation in the event they acquired both Gray and Garcia with three righties and three lefties.

 For now, it looks like Brian Cashman is going for it as he looks to add starting pitching before the 4:00 PM ET trade deadline on July 31. With Gray and now Garcia in the mix, the Yankees could soon take over as the favorites in the AL East.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason.
