MLB Trade Rumors: Yankees have entered in Justin Wilson sweepstakes

According to Anthony Fenech on twitter, the Yankees have entered as potential suitors for a Justin Wilson trade. Wilson pitched for the Yankees in 2015 before being traded to the Detroit Tigers for Luis Cessa and Chad Green in the offseason. Back in 2015, he was one of Joe Girardi’s most trusted relievers, He posted a 3.10 ERA in 74 games and 61 innings pitched. Wilson is currently having one of his best seasons and would be a welcomed addition to the bullpen.

The Tigers were shopping Justin Wilson in December 2016 and were looking for “controllable major league arms” according to the New York Post. In 2017 Wilson has a 2.75 ERA, 0.941 WHIP and 55 strikeouts in 41 games and 39.1 innings pitched. His 2017 success so far has created a lot of buzz with multiple teams reportedly interested in the Tiger reliever. Unfortunately for the Yankees, that means the price could be rising. Other teams interested in Wilson are the Colorado Rockies and the Boston Red Sox, both teams have very good farm systems.


The Yankees probably won’t want to spend that much on Wilson. The most likely scenario is that the Tigers will get a couple of lesser-known Minor League pitchers, from either the Yankees or another team. I doubt they will get any top prospects. The Yankees currently have a very strong bullpen - with the additions of David Robertson and Tommy Kahnle - that seems to be coming out of their midseason funk. It is possible that Brian Cashman might be trying to block a Wilson trade to Boston or at least raise the price. But if the rumor is true, trading for Wilson would give the Yankees' bullpen a lot more flexibility and he could be a huge addition down the stretch.
