Yankees Rumors: The Yankees may have interest in Padres’ lefty Brad Hand
It has been reported that Padres’
David Post, the special assistant to the general manager A.J. Preller, has been
scouting the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, the Yankees’ AAA team. The idea
around the baseball industry is that this is because the Yankees have interest
in trading for the Friars’ All-Star left handed reliever Brad Hand.

First of all, of course the Yankees
have interest in Hand. He’s been one of the better relievers in baseball this
year, and the Yankees could use a reliever or five to help fix their bullpen
which, as most readers will know, has been an absolute train wreck the past
month or so. Hand so far has a 2.30 ERA in 42 appearances this year, to go with
an 11.49 K/BB, 2.49 BB/9, and a 48.6% ground ball rate. He also has the ability
to neutralize hitters from both sides of the plate, with lefties hitting just
.192/.300/.365 against him and righties hitting just .203/.262/.293. He would
be a perfect upgrade to the Yankee bullpen, which has two lefties (not
including the closer Chapman) in Tyler Webb and Chasen Shreve, but neither has
proved to be that trustworthy. Hand might be the piece the Yankees need to stabilize
the bullpen.
As for a trade, Hand won’t come
cheap. He won’t cost any top prospects such as Gleyber Torres or Clint Frazier,
but he should fetch a decent haul. The Yankees may pass on Hand because of
this, especially since they have shown that they are unwilling to trade any of
their prospects. Other teams that are in win-now mode might offer a better
package to the Padres, which the Yankees might not want to match. Either way
though, Hand would be a good fit for the team.
