MLB Trade Rumors: Yankees still have "excellent chance" at getting Sonny Gray even after Jaime Garcia trade
As the trade deadline
approaches, the Yankees are still looking to upgrade their rotation after
adding Twins lefty Jaime Garcia early this morning. Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports the Yankees are still looking to add Oakland’s starting pitcher Sonny
Gray in the upcoming hours and notes that the club has an "excellent chance" at acquiring the starter.
The rumors of Gray to the Bronx have been rampant the past few weeks even before starting pitcher Michael Pineda’s season ended with Tommy John, and with reports of the A’s backing off their demands for Clint Frazier and Gleyber Torres, negotiations have ramped up. The righty sports a 6-5 record, 3.43 ERA, 3.13 K/BB, and a 3.24 FIP in 16 starts this season for the A’s.
The 27-year-old is under contract through the 2019 season in contrast to Jaime Garcia, who is a free agent after this season. Although Gray may not be a “true ace,” he could end up being a solid number two in the rotation, and with young pitchers like Jordan Montgomery and Luis Severino possibly on innings limits this year, it would be wise for Brian Cashman to add another proven arm to the roster.
