MLB Trade Rumors: Yankees, Athletics discussing Yonder Alonso trade

Per MLB.com's Jon Morosi, the Yankees have heated up their talks with the Oakland Athletics over first baseman Yonder Alonso.  It was first reported yesterday that the Athletics had sent scouts to single-A Charleston to view Blake Rutherford, Estevan Florial, Hoy Jun Park and Freicer Perez, and today it seems that talks are progressing, although nothing is imminent at this time. The Yankees have also previously expressed interest in other lefty first basemen, namely, Lucas Duda of the Mets, Justin Bour of the Marlins and Matt Adams of the Braves.

Alonso is having a breakout season for the Athletics (.268/.366/.555 with 21 home runs) and seemingly fits the Yankees present and future plans perfectly.  As a pending free agent at season's end, Alonso can walk and the Yankees can allow Greg Bird to reclaim the starting first base spot once he returns from his potentially season ending ankle surgery.  Youngster Garrett Cooper has looked good of late at first base, but bringing in Alonso would allow the Yankees to deploy a strong platoon at first base, with Alonso getting the lion's share of the work against right-hand pitchers while Cooper would start against lefties. 



Ideally, the Yankees would not part with one of their blue chip prospects unless this trade were to expand to also include A's ace Sonny Gray. With Alonso in the midst of a slump – 20 for his last 103 (.194) with just five home runs and eight runs batted in over his last 30 games - and set to be a free agent at season's end, he should not cost the Yankees a top prospect.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
