Cashman: Clint Frazier to be sent down when Aaron Hicks returns

Before the season started, it was thought that Yankees outfielder Clint Frazier wasn’t supposed to make his MLB debut until late in the season. However, due to injuries to Aaron Hicks and Dustin Fowler, Frazier made his debut on the first of July against Houston, where he went 2-4 with a double and HR. His electric start didn’t end there, recording a walk off HR against the Brewers, and currently is slashing a .298/.306/.638 with two triples, three doubles, and three HRs.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman told WFAN’s Mike Francesa, he plans on sending the red hot outfielder down to the minors when Aaron Hicks returns from the disabled list. The switch-hitting outfielder Hicks caught a lot of criticism last year from the fan base with his .217 batting average. After losing the competition for the starting right field spot to Aaron Judge this past spring training, he had taken on the role of the fourth outfielder for the Yankees.
Hicks has been out of the lineup since June 25th with an oblique injury he suffered against Texas and was enjoying a great start of his own, batting .290 and even pushing for an All-Star spot before his injury. When starting center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury went to the DL with a concussion, Hicks filled in more than admirably, hitting .390 with 11 RBIs, a .449 OBP, and a .986 OPS in his first 12 games as the starter. This recent success has proved that the Yankees patience with Hicks to be well worth it.

On the other hand, Frazier is still young and has plenty of time to develop. He was able to have this great success while working on his swing mechanics at the same time, so giving him more time to work on that will help his growth as a hitter. His time in the MLB hopefully gave him the sense of what he needs to work on to reach his full potential.
Cashman did mention that Frazier would probably rejoin the team when September call ups come around, so his absence from the team may be short-lived. Frazier’s time in the majors has helped quell the critics that claimed the red headed slugger was more flash than substance. Hicks will hopefully continue to build on his hot start, making the demotion of Frazier less controversial. The fan base has grown to love the outfielder known as “Red Thunder,” and will be looking forward to his return.
