Yankees Roster Update: Recapping 40-man roster moves 11/20/17

Image
Entering the day, the New York Yankees had 37 players occupying their 40-man roster with an 8:00 PM EST deadline looming in which 40-man rosters across baseball would freeze ahead of the December 5th Rule 5 Draft. The Yankees had a number of top prospects outside the 40-man roster who would otherwise be Rule 5 eligible unless added, but not enough spots to protect them all.  At the start of the day, the team was looking to protect INF Gleyber Torres, RHP Domingo Acevedo, INF Thairo Estrada, 1B/OF Billy McKinney & RHP Albert Abreu. Yankee injury news: Garrett Cooper hits the 10-day DL with hamstring tendonitis, Tyler Austin recalled

Image
It was leaked on Twitter that Tyler Austin was on the move, when there were multiple reports about his cleaned-out locker and absence from the Triple-A lineup card. A short time after, it was revealed that he was heading to Citi Field to join the Yankees. The corresponding move was the placement of Garrett Cooper on the 10-day disabled list with what is being labeled as “hamstring tendonitis.” Photo Credit: Getty Images It is not yet known when the pain started for Cooper, but nevertheless, it must have concerned the Yankees enough to have to put him on the disabled list. Cooper was playing well before his injury as he was hitting .326 with six extra base-hits in only 43 at-bats. Austin is fresh off the disabled list for the second time this season, but has not played well in limited MLB action in 2017 as he is slashing .154/.200/.385 in four games this season. However, in 158 Minor League at-bats, Austin is slashing .304/.369/.563, which shows that the offensive talent is...

Bullpen dazzles again, Didi gets the big hit as Yanks win 5-3

Image
The Yankees survived a near Aroldis Chapman meltdown last night to take both games in the Bronx vs the Mets, as the split Subway series was in Flushing on Wednesday night for two games before another series vs the Red Sox. Jaime Garcia was making his third start as a Yankee, and gave them a solid performance, pitching into the sixth inning. Garcia would find trouble in the sixth, but would be picked up by the Yankee bullpen, which was dominant once again as the Yankees beat the Mets on the road 5-3. Photo Credit: AP Frank Franklin II

Yankees send Clint Frazier to DL with oblique strain, reinstate Aaron Hicks

Image
Shortly after last night’s lineups came out and Clint Frazier was demoted to the eight spot in the batting order, it was announced that he would sit the game out with an oblique strain. His replacement Garrett Cooper went on to have a great night in that eight hole, going 4-for-5 with two RBIs. Now, the Yanks have placed Frazier on the ten-day DL for that oblique strain and have activated Aaron Hicks. Photo Credit: AP

Big nights from Frazier, Cooper lead Yankees to 11-5 win over Toronto

Image
The Yankees looked to rebound from yet another dismal loss on Wednesday night as they sent Masahiro Tanaka to the mound against journeyman Toronto right hander Nick  Tepesch .  The Yankees' familiar RISP failures  plagued them right from the start in this one but the bats ultimately woke up from last night's slumber as the Yankees poured it on late for an 11-5 win over the Blue Jays in a game highlighted by Todd Frazier and Garrett Cooper's big nights at the plate.   Mark Blinch/The Canadian Press via AP

Yanks place struggling Matt Holliday on DL, recall Garrett Cooper

Image
This morning, the Yankees officially placed their struggling DH, Matt Holliday, on the 10-day disabled list due to a lower back issue. The 37-year old, signed to a one-year contract this past offseason, has struggled immensely since being activated from an earlier DL stint. Holliday, whose performance paid dividends earlier in the season, has been a shell of himself during the second half. Since outfielder Aaron Hicks, currently on a rehab assignment, is not yet ready to be activated from his own DL stint, the Yankees have recalled Garrett Cooper to take Holliday's spot on the roster. Yankees' comeback falls short, as they drop game three to Seattle in extras 6-5

Image
The Yankees had a chance to win their first series in well over a month when they took the field Saturday night in Seattle. Unfortunately, starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka made the task extremely challenging when he allowed the Mariners to hang a crooked four on the scoreboard in the third inning. The Yankees scratched and clawed their way back into the game to tie it back up in both the eighth and ninth inning. The team made a valiant effort to continue fighting down to their last out, but it would not be enough to earn a win. Photo Credit: Ted S. Warren/AP

Yankee fail to execute with RISP and drop game late in 4-2 loss in Minnesota

Image
The Yankees opened up a three-game set against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field after splitting a four game series against division rival Boston Red Sox. Now entering their second series of a long 11 game road trip, the Yanks were looking to get on track by winning their first series since June 11th back in the Bronx when they swept the Orioles. After being shutout last night, the Yankees were once again held in check on Monday night in a 4-2 loss that ended with a late Twins rally. Photo Credit: Jesse Johnson | USA TODAY Sports The Yankees sent Bryan Mitchell to the mound who looked shaky at first, but finished strong giving the Yankees five solid innings while only giving up two runs. Yet, it could have been much worse if it wasn’t for the arm of Aaron Judge where in the bottom of the third he gunned down Brian Dozier while he was attempting to score on what would have been a sacrifice fly. The Yankees head to Minnesota this week for a three game series, as it’s the first time these teams have faced off this season. This series is big in the AL Wild Card race, as the 47-43 Yankees are currently 1.5 games ahead of the Twins for the second spot in the race. The Yanks are also only 0.5 games behind their division foe the Rays for the first spot and 3.5 games back of the Red Sox.

Tanaka pitches well, but Yankees get shut out for first time all season in 3-0 loss in series finale

Image
Following a clean 3-0 win in game one of the day/night doubleheader in Boston, the Yankees came into Sunday night's game looking to take three of four against the first place Red Sox. The Yankees sent Masahiro Tanaka to the mound against David Price, who has had a recent history of struggling mightily against the Yankees. Unfortunately, Price brought his best stuff as the Red Sox shutout the Yankees with a 3-0 win of their own.   Photo Credit: Adam Glanzman | Getty Images Tanaka was cruising through his first two innings of work, but ran into a bit of trouble in the third after allowing a two-run bomb to Mookie Betts. Still, Tanaka settled down and would only allow one other run in the sixth inning on a Dustin Pedroia RBI single. This was a strong start for Tanaka who put together seven encouraging innings. Unfortunately for the Yankees, the offensive highlights were few and far between. Aside from Garrett Cooper recording his first hit a double down the line, the Yank...

The Yankees have  announced  a flurry  of moves prior to tonight's game against the Boston Red Sox. The big news of the day, of course, is that Michael Pineda has been diagnosed with a partially torn UCL in his elbow and seems destined for Tommy John Surgery.  His tenure in New York is likely over as he is set to become a free agent at season's end.  Jordan Montgomery has been recalled from triple-A and will his start tonight in place of Pineda.
