Yankees Roster Update: Recapping 40-man roster moves 11/20/17
Entering the day, the New York Yankees had 37 players occupying their 40-man roster with an 8:00 PM EST deadline looming in which 40-man rosters across baseball would freeze ahead of the December 5th Rule 5 Draft.
The Yankees had a number of top prospects outside the 40-man roster who would otherwise be Rule 5 eligible unless added, but not enough spots to protect them all. At the start of the day, the team was looking to protect INF Gleyber Torres, RHP Domingo Acevedo, INF Thairo Estrada, 1B/OF Billy McKinney & RHP Albert Abreu.

This past weekend, Brian Cashman made a deal with Mariners’ GM Jerry Dipoto which sent RHP Nick Rumbelow to Seattle in exchange for pitchers JP Sears and Juan Then. Rumbelow had just recently been added to the 40-man roster, but the Yankees had bigger priorities and he was the first excess piece to pay the price as the team approached tonight’s roster crunch deadline.
Yankees trade Ronald Herrera to Texas
The first deal of the day today saw the Yankees deal RHP Ronald Herrera, whom they had traded for back in 2015 from San Diego for INF Jose Pirela. In return, the Yankees acquired young LHP Reiver Sanmartin. Herrera appeared in just two games for New York in 2017 going 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA. Sanmartin, just 21 years old, went 7-2 with a 2.45 ERA this past season in A-ball for Spokane (short season) and Hickory.

Just before 7:00 PM EST, Robert Murray of FanRag reported that the Yankees had dealt 1B Garrett Cooper to the Miami Marlins. A redundant right handed first baseman with Tyler Austin and with Billy McKinney learning first base in the Arizona Fall League this month, Cooper was deemed expendable as the Yankees roster purge continued.

In return, New York acquires RHP Michael King as well as additional international signing bonus pool money ($250,000) for this offseason, likely to be used on Japanese phenom Shohei Ohtani if he is officially posted.
Cooper went 14-for-43 (.326) for New York this year in 13 games with no home runs and six runs batted in. Smith pitched in nine games (two starts) for the Yankees and went an underwhelming 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA, 1.661 WHIP and four home runs allowed in just 18.1 innings pitched.
In King, the Yankees receive another young arm (King is just 22) with some upside and years of team control. Over two years in the minors, King has pitched to 14-12 record with a 3.31 ERA. King attended Boston College and was drafted in the 12th round of the 2016 draft.
Following the trade of Cooper and Smith the Yankees had six available spots on the 40-man rotation and used them all.
Yankees add Torres, Acevedo, Estrada, others to 40-man roster
Prior to the 8:00 PM roster freeze deadline, the Yankees used their newly vacated 40-man roster spots to protect their top prospects. In addition to Torres, Estrada, Acevedo, Abreu and McKinney, the Yankees selected RHP Jonathan Loaisiga to the 40-man roster.#Yankees add to 40-man roster: RHP Albert Abreu, RHP Domingo Acevedo, INF Thairo Estrada, RHP Jonathan Loaisiga, OF Billy McKinney, INF Gleyber Torres.— Joel Sherman (@Joelsherman1) November 21, 2017
The Yankees will need to move additional pieces in the coming week if they plan on signing any available free agents.
