Yankees trade rumors: Yankees among eight-plus teams to have "checked in" on Giancarlo Stanton
It’s no secret
that the best player in the Major Leagues that could be on the move this
offseason is Marlin’s slugger Giancarlo Stanton. Jon Heyman
of FanRag Sports reported that they Yankees are one of eight
teams that have had contact with the Marlins about Stanton. Heyman reported
that the brief talks were “initiated by the Miami” but that the Yankees “at
least not at this point” are serious contenders for Stanton.
A few months ago, I wrote a piece about the benefits of a possible trade for Stanton. While having Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez, and Giancarlo Stanton in the same lineup would be absolutely unbelievable to think about, it wouldn’t come at a very low expense. (I mean seriously could you imagine Judge and Stanton in the same lineup?) The Yankees could technically afford Stanton, but owner Hal Steinbrenner has said on multiple occasions that he would like Brian Cashman to get this payroll under the $197 million luxury tax.
The only reason
the Marlins would want to move Stanton is to shed payroll, because there isn’t
a team in the world who has no use for this guy. In 2017, Stanton hit .281 with
a whopping 59 homers and 132 RBI. Stanton just turned 28 years old, and is just
entering his prime. Is he worth $295 million over the next 10 years? Probably
not, but at this point, if anybody is going to be paid that much money, it’s
either Mike Trout, Bryce Harper, Clayton Kershaw, or Giancarlo Stanton.
Stanton
has a full no-trade clause and recently said that he probably wouldn’t accept a
trade that would send him to Boston or St. Louis. After year after
year of losing, there’s no doubt that Stanton is going to want to go somewhere
that he can compete for a World Series right away. While the Yankees make sense
on that front, I’m not sure if the Yankees would want to pick up that contract
especially if they want to contend in the Manny Machado and/or Bryce Harper sweepstakes.
Granted, the Yankees do have the prospects to pull off this deal.
