The Yankees wasted no time dumping salary in wake of the trade for Giancarlo Stanton, departing with second baseman Starlin Castro (Miami) and Chase Headley (San Diego). Castro will be making $10M in 2018 with the Marlins, while Headley will be making $13M in 2018 with the Padres. Dumping these two contracts offset the cost of Giancarlo Stanton, but it also leaves two holes at 2B and 3B. After an already exciting offseason for the Yankees, one big question still remains: will the Yankees resign CC Sabathia? After recent rumors about the Yankees being interested in trading for Gerritt Cole, a guy they once drafted, it almost seems like they’re turning their shoulder on Sabathia. CC has been worth every penny of his monster contract that the Yankees offered him in 2009. Not only has he performed, but he has genuinely enjoyed his time in New York. Today I had a heated argument with a teammate of mine about the state of the Yankees. He was upset that the Yankees pursued Stanton because they “didn’t need him” and “need starting pitching.” I told him to shut up. I have HAD IT with people complaining about the Yankees starting pitching issues. Of course, if the Yankees don’t resign CC Sabathia, it would be wise to go out and get a guy to settle out the back end of the rotation. However, if they do bring him back, which I pray they do, the Yankees will thrive in 2018 with what they have.  In 2017, the Yankees starting rotation had serious question marks. Masahiro Tanaka was the ace without question, and he ended up having the worst year out of all five starters. The prospect load isn’t overwhelming, but the Marlins have acquired all-star second baseman Starlin Castro. So, this leaves a gaping hole at second base right? Not exactly. The Yankees are obviously very excited about their number one prospect in all of baseball in Gleyber Torres. Hurt for most of 2017 due to Tommy John surgery in his non-throwing arm, Torres promises to have an all-star caliber career for the Yankees. Moving Castro could simply be making room for Torres to start at second base heading into the 2018 season.  If Torres is going to start for the Yankees at second base, he’s going to have to prove his worth in Spring Training. It’s no secret that the best player in the Major Leagues that could be on the move this offseason is Marlin’s slugger Giancarlo Stanton.  Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports  reported that they Yankees are one of eight teams that have had contact with the Marlins about Stanton. The Yankees would look to stay hot behind the arm of Masahiro Tanaka, who has been fairly consistent in the second half of the season. His split finger fastball, which is his go-to with two strikes, has been very electric. Coming into the game, the Yankees could clinch a playoff spot with a win, an Astros win, and an A’s win.  Unfortunately, Tanaka didn't have anything going for him tonight and buried the Yankees early en route to a crushing 8-1 defeat, all but ending any remaining chance this team had at snatching the AL East title from Boston. Matt Holliday’s three run shot in his first game back off the DL proves to be the big difference today in the win for the Yankees. Masahiro Tanaka was about as good as he gets, providing seven innings of one run ball. The Yankees were three-for-five with runners in scoring position and Chase Headley recorded his eighth three hit game of the season en route to a 5-1 Yankees victory.

The Yankees won Greg Bird’s return game on the back of Sonny Gray and Jacoby Ellsbury. Sonny Gray threw seven innings of one run baseball, and Jacoby Ellsbury had four RBI’s including a three-run home run. Late defensive blunders led the Mariners to make the game close at the end, but the Yankees provided enough runs for a 6-3 victory in the Bronx. Photo Credit: Adam Hunger | AP

With the news of Giancarlo Stanton clearing waivers and being available for a trade and the transition in team ownership in Miami, there has been a surplus of speculation of who could be a potential suitor for the fearsome slugger. The Yankees are one team that has not only the money to take on a massive contract like Stanton's but the prospects the Marlins may covet in a deal, which has resulted them in being a possible trade partner with Miami. While the likelihood of a Stanton trade in August is extremely slim, he could be available in the offseason. A pair of three-run bombs from Andrew Benintendi proved to be the difference in the Red Sox romping of the Yankees on Saturday evening. Luis Severino exploded for eight earned runs and ten runs total. The offense continued to struggle, as the Red Sox swung their way to a 10-5 victory. There’s no doubt that the Yankees have been in the market for a front of the rotation arm for a couple of years now. With CC Sabathia’s health issues, Masahiro Tanaka pitching to a five-plus ERA, and Michael Pineda’s inconsistency, the Yankees most consistent starters have been rookie Jordan Montgomery and flamethrower Luis Severino.  However, even Severino has been shaky as of late, and the trade deadline is approaching. Jose Quintana has been a name that has floated around in Yankee land for the past year or so. Grade: C- Coming into the season, the Yankees and their fans pretty much knew what they were going to get from Austin Romine. However, Romine had to play a little bigger role on the 2017 Yankees than in previous seasons. A pretty steady backup catcher since 2013, Romine had to fill some big shoes early on when Gary Sanchez went down in Baltimore with a bicep injury. He's shown that he could actually be more valuable to a team as a starting catcher, and filled Gary's role much better than expected. Romine has also seen some time at first base, a position the Yankees have struggled with all season, and has done better than expected there as well. The bad news is Starling Castro was taken out of tonights game in Chicago with a reported pulled hamstring. The good news is that help is on the way. Tyler Wade was taken out of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders game following a rain delay, and many have speculated that he was packing his bags to join the Yankees in Chicago. The Yankees were unable to get a winning streak going against the Rangers in an 8-1 loss on Saturday. The bats were quiet all game long, and the Bomber's bullpen continued to struggle. Tyler Clippard stunk up the place, and the sole RBI of the game was a homerun by, you guessed it, Aaron Judge. Cessa’s last start wasn’t very good, so the pressure was definitely on him to perform.
