Yankees injury news: Yankees place Aaron Hicks on DL with oblique strain, recall Caleb Smith
Aaron
Hicks will not be in the lineup Sunday night vs the Red Sox. The Yankees have
placed the 27-year-old outfielder on the 10-day DL with a strain in his left
oblique. Caleb Smith has been recalled from Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre.
Hicks was removed from centerfield at the end of the sixth inning in Saturday’s game after he felt pain making a catch near the wall. He was replaced with Jacoby Ellsbury, who later tripled and scored.
The
timing couldn’t be much worse for the Yankees. Leading the AL Wild Card top
spot with 27 games left, Hicks has played a major role in this Yankees offense.
Although he has scuffled of late, he’s hit .265 with 13 home runs and 48 RBI’s
in 82 games for the Yankees this season. He’s also posted a very respectable
3.3 WAR (wins above replacement).
Expect
to see Jacoby Ellsbury to be in the everyday lineup until the return of Clint
Frazier, who is on the DL with a similar injury as Hicks, his being on the
right side.
Frazier
was placed on the 10 DL in early August with, what Joe Girardi called, a much
less significant strain than Aaron Hicks. Frazier still hasn’t returned, and
because this has been a reoccurring injury for Hicks, don’t expect to see him
anytime soon. Unfortunately, we could have seen the last of Aaron Hicks this
season.
Jacoby
Ellsbury and Tyler Austin will have their chances to play every day in place of
Hicks. Ahead of tonight’s game, don’t be surprised to see Tyler Austin
somewhere in the lineup. A right-handed bat with success against Chris Sale is
an edge any team should take a chance on.
