Didi Gregorius makes Yankees history during win over Orioles
In the illustrious 115-year
history of the New York Yankees, 88 men have played shortstop for the team.
Today, current SS Didi Gregorius reached a mark that none of the previous 87
can lay claim to. In the fourth inning of today’s 7-4 win over the Orioles,
Didi launched a home run into right field to put the Yankees on the board. It
was his 20th
round-tripper of the season, making him the first Yankees shortstop to hit 20
or more homers in consecutive seasons.
When you look down the list of former players to man the position, it doesn’t seem possible that none of the others ever accomplished this feat. There are both current and future Hall of Famers, including the likes of Tony Kubek, Phil Rizzuto, and Derek Jeter. At just 27 years old, Gregorius is trying to prove that he belongs in the same category of some of those greats.

While his acquisition in 2015
was initially met with criticism from most of the Yankees fanbase, Didi
Gregorius has continued to improve as an all-around player. His solid defense
meshes with his ability to hit for not only contact, but power as well. He has
become not only a fan favorite, but one of the best shortstops in the Major League
Baseball today.
