Red-hot Yankees clinch home field for Wild Card game after cruising to 6-1 victory against Rays

Fresh off a record breaking performance by Aaron Judge when he hit his 50th home run of the season in an 11-3 throttling of the Royals in a makeup game, the Yankees took on the Rays in the first of a three game set. The Yankees sent Jordan Montgomery to the hill making his 28th start of his rookie campaign. In what could be his last outing of the year, Montgomery excelled going six strong allowing just one run in the Yankees 6-1 win on Tuesday night.

The Yankees got behind early in the game on a sacrifice fly that could have given the Yankees a huge deficit. With the bases loaded, Rays catcher Wilson Ramos drove a ball deep to the Yankees bullpen only to have Aaron Hicks, in his first game back, leap up and on the wall to rob a grand slam. The Rays scored a run on the play, but the magnificent catch saved the Yankees from surrendering three more runs in the first inning.

 The Yankees quickly got back into the game on a leadoff home run by Starlin Castro to start the second inning. From there, Rays starter Blake Snell got into some serious trouble allowing three straight singles to Todd Frazier, Clint Frazier, and Ronald Torreyes to load the bases for the top of the order with no one out. Then, Snell walked both Hicks and Judge to force in two more runs to put the Yankees ahead 3-1. Snell was taken out after just one plus inning of work, and reliever Chaz Roe then threw a wild pitch to plate Torreyes as the fourth Yankee run of the inning.

The Yankees scored their fifth and sixth runs of the game on RBI singles from both Gary Sanchez and Holliday, putting the Yankees ahead with a commanding 6-1 lead. Dellin Betances entered to slam the door in the ninth to seal the Yankees 88th victory of the season. The win officially clinched home field for the Wild Card game, though the Yankees are still mathematically in the AL East race.

Montgomery ended up pitching six innings allowing six hits, one run, one walk, and he picked up five strikeouts as he picked up his ninth win of the season. Tommy Kahnle then pitched the seventh, with David Robertson taking the ball in the eighth, and Betances going in the ninth.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason.
