Late Tuesday evening, Jeff Passan of ESPN broke news that the New York Yankees were in agreement with free-agent shortstop Troy Tulowitzki. The one-year contract, which will pay Tulowitzki the league minimum salary, provides the Yankees with a stopgap option at SS while Didi Gregorius recovers from offseason Tommy John Surgery.   Passan also notes that this deal does not preclude the team from continuing to pursue Manny Machado. The Yankees are coming off a nice three-game sweep of their division foe Toronto Blue Jays, while the Marlins are coming off a series victory over playoff contending Washington Nationals.   The last time these two met in early April, they split a two-game series, both games lopsided affairs. This left the Yankees at 8-8, good for third place in their division. Since that point, they have been the second best team in baseball, only the Red Sox have a better record.   The Yankees will be facing off against a pair of rookies, with no prior starts against them.

Wednesday night in the Bronx was not a good time to be in a Yankee uniform, as the Rays jumped on the Yanks early and defeated them 6-1. In a game that was started by the infamous Luis Cessa, the Yanks just never seemed to get things going, especially after leaving the base loaded early in the game. The loss kept the Yanks an even .500 on the year against Tampa, and it marked the seventh loss in the last nine games to Tampa. The lone run of the game for the Yanks came in the second inning, as Miguel Andujar lined a ball into the left field seats for his 19th homer of the season to tie the game at one. The Yanks would immediately give up this lead, however the fourth inning saw the Yanks knock out Tampas starter and have the bases loaded with one out. With the bases juiced, Romine struck out and Toe was originally ruled safe on an infield single but was shortly ruled out after replay showed he did not beat the throw. Living in Virginia Beach and being a New York Yankees fan is a tough gig. The closest major league stadiums to me are in Baltimore and Washington DC, and the Bronx is a solid eight-hour drive away. However, the Norfolk Tides, the Triple-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, are a short trip away and this is a prime chance to see the next wave of Yankees talent play when the Railriders come into town, usually once a year. I was able to catch two games of their three-game series (both wins), and here is what I noticed in the eighteen innings I watched.

When the Yankees acquired Brandon Drury from the Diamondbacks in February, he was immediately handed the keys to the starting third base job for the Bombers. Drury came in with a proven Big League track record after hitting .275 while averaging 15 home runs and 58 RBI per year over the last two seasons in Arizona. He has proven to be a solid starting infielder at the Major League level, while logging time at both second and third base (the Yankees' two perceived weak spots coming into the year). Late in the offseason, the Yanks made a minor splash in signing veteran infielder Neil Walker, shoring up the team’s depth in the infield. So far, the deal just hasn’t worked itself out, as Walker’s late start to his spring training has ultimately affected his play. The big toe, as defined by the Healthline Medical Team,  “is one of five digits located on the front of the foot.”  Furthermore, the big toe’s function is to provide additional leverage when doing    everyday functions such as running or walking. The removal of this toe would cause the body to    have to retrain itself, so other muscles could perform these functions. Ch Ch Ch Ch A A A-RON, is the sound Tigers fans are going to be hearing in their sleep tonight on Friday the 13th.  Comerica Park turned into a house of horrors for them as the Yankees’ bats came back to life resulting in a 8-6 victory.  Jordan Montgomery, coming off an unmemorable start against Baltimore, bounced back nicely in this victory. The Yankees lost a heart breaker to the Orioles 8-7. They had an early five run lead, and they blew it. They had bases loaded and no outs in the 12th, down by one, and they blew that too. Jordan Montgomery struggled even though he had a five-run lead. On top of that, the Yankees offense failed in important late inning situations yet again. After scoring 11 runs on Tuesday, the Yankees’ offense stayed hot on Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays 7-2. Wednesday’s game was delayed for over an hour due to rain in the Bronx, but the weather did not affect New York’s power strokes, as Giancarlo Stanton, Gary Sanchez, and Aaron Judge all went deep. On the other side of the ball, Yankees’ starter Luis Severino was in control, picking up his second win in as many starts. There are many talented young players on this Yankees team. One guy that gets overlooked is Ronald Torreyes. He may not be on the same level or even near the same level as other young guys such as Aaron Judge or Gary Sanchez, but Torreyes is certainly still a valuable player to the Yankees. After going through much of the offseason unsigned, the Yankees swooped in and signed versatile infielder Neil Walker to a one-year deal worth $4-million. Despite signing the 32-year-old veteran to a big league deal, Walker is expected to begin the season coming off the bench, and he should see time at second, third, and first base with the Bronx Bombers. I don't have to tell you that that this offseason in baseball has been slow - painfully slow. MLB fans of all teams have been driven mad by the dull proceedings this winter and as a result, even the smallest of moves have been met with far greater reaction than necessary. The Yankees wasted no time dumping salary in wake of the trade for Giancarlo Stanton, departing with second baseman Starlin Castro (Miami) and Chase Headley (San Diego). Castro will be making $10M in 2018 with the Marlins, while Headley will be making $13M in 2018 with the Padres. Dumping these two contracts offset the cost of Giancarlo Stanton, but it also leaves two holes at 2B and 3B. The most experienced being Ronald Torreyes, but he’s proven to be a very valuable bench piece as a utility player, and I’d imagine that role would continue for him in 2018, that is if he doesn’t win the starting second base job. It seems that even after acquiring slugger Giancarlo Stanton, the Yankees are not done shopping this offseason.  According to Joel Sherman of the NY Post , the Yankees have traded righty Bryan Mitchell and third baseman Chase Headley to the Padres for outfielder Jabari Blash. This is also a two for one trade to clear space on the 40-man roster.   With the subtraction of Headley and the $13 million left on his contract for 2018, Todd Frazier automatically becomes a candidate to be resigned by the Yankees to man third base. Frazier, a New Jersey guy who clearly loves playing in pinstripes, should be fairly easy for the Yankees to retain if they want him to.
