Yankees blow five-run, early lead, lose to O's 8-7 in extra innings

The Yankees lost a heart breaker to the Orioles 8-7. They had an early five run lead, and they blew it. They had bases loaded and no outs in the 12th, down by one, and they blew that too. Jordan Montgomery struggled even though he had a five-run lead. On top of that, the Yankees offense failed in important late inning situations yet again. Bottom line, this team is atrocious right now.

The Orioles failed to score in the top half of the first, but it was a different story for the Yanks in their half. Mike Wright Jr., the Orioles’ starter didn’t last very long. With runners on the corners and one out, the batter was Neil Walker. Walker hit a tapper to the mound and Wright Jr. fired to second in the hopes of starting a double play in which he had no shot at. 

The throw pulled Manny Machado off the bag and everyone was safe. The Yankees had a quick 1-0 lead. However, they wouldn’t stop there. Later in the inning, Miguel Andujar hit a two-run single to make it 3-0. A couple batters later, Austin Ronnie added a run on a base-hit followed by a long RBI double by Ronald Torreyes. In the blink of an eye, the Yankees led 5-0.

Jordan Montgomery really labored in four and a third innings of work. A second inning run scoring single by Anthony Santander made it 5-1. In the following inning, Adam Jones added an RBI single of his own to cut the Yankees’ lead to three.

It was clear Montgomery was struggling. With one out in the fifth, he surrendered a two-run home run to Danny Valencia which made it a one run game. At that point, Aaron Boone decided it was time to go to the pen. Domingo German came in and recorded the final two outs of the top of the fifth to keep it a 5-4 game.

In the bottom half, Romine added a run with his second RBI single of the game. The Orioles got that run right back in the sixth though when Machado singled to right to score the O’s fifth run and again making it a one run game.

In the seventh, the Orioles took their first lead of the game on an Anthony Santander go-ahead two-run homer. Just like that, it was 7-6 Orioles.  The Yankees wasted no time. In the bottom half of the inning, with two outs, Romine hit his THIRD run scoring single of the game knotting things up at seven.

The Yankees bullpen did its part late in the game. Betances, Chapman, Shreve, and Robertson each pitched a scoreless inning. Unfortunately in the 12th Adam Warren gave up the lead in the to make it 8-7.

The Yankees loaded the bases in their half with no outs with Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton due up. They should at least tie the game, right? Not the 2018 Yankees! Instead, Judge hit into a double play and guess what Stanton did!? If you guessed he struck out yet again to end the game, you're right!

The Yankees will now head to Boston to take on the rival Red Sox for the first time in 2018. After an off day tomorrow, the opener will be Tuesday night at 7:05. It’ll be a battle of the aces as Luis Severino will face off against Chris Sale.
