Trio of homers not enough to back Gray’s rough outing

Coming off a low-scoring contest in Thursday’s game, both teams came out slugging on Friday. Unfortunately for the Yankees, Sonny Gray had another terrible start, and homers from Austin, Stanton, and Andujar were not enough to get the Yankees the victory.

The Yankees initiated the scoring affair as Tyler Austin carried his success over from the opening series in Toronto into this series by taking Marco Estrada deep for a two-run home run to give the Yankees a quick 2-0 lead in the second, his third homer of the season and third off of Estrada.

The Blue Jays did not take long to answer back as Teoscar Hernandez homered in the top half of the third scoring himself and Curtis Granderson to make it a 2-2 game.

Similar to their adversaries, the Yankees did not let the Blue Jays keep their lead for more than half  of an inning. Giancarlo blasted an opposite field two-run homer to give the Yankees a 4-2 lead and the fans something to cheer about.

Sonny Gray did not hold the second lead of the night his offense gave him as he had another poor night on the mound. He allowed back-to-back doubles to Russell Martin and Kendrys Morales followed by an RBI single by Kevin Pillar. Gray then threw a wild pitch to allow Pillar to advance to second. This set-up Lourdes Gurriel Jr. who singled up the middle for his first major league hit and RBI. Gray then walked Granderson, and Boone decided he had seen enough as he opted to go to Domingo German who escaped without any further damage.

In the Yankees’ half of the fourth they tied the game back up as Miguel Andujar stayed red-hot with his second home run in as many games played.

German flashed electric stuff, but struggled with command as he walked three batters and allowed another base-hit to Gurriel Jr. as the Jays collected two more runs to make it 7-5.

After the Yankees went down 1-2-3 against Estrada, Solarte took Adam Warren’s second pitch of the game deep to right field to make it 8-5.

Despite the bullpen keeping the deficit at three, the Yankees could not muster any more runs off of the Blue Jays bullpen, and the Yankees dropped game two of the series 8-5.

What’s next?

The Yankees will look to secure a victory tomorrow to guarantee at least a split in the series as Jordan Montgomery will oppose Marcus Stroman. First pitch is at 1:05 ET.
