Yankees place Ben Heller on 10-day DL with a right elbow bone spur

Another Yankee player is being the placed on the disabled list as Triple-A reliever Ben Heller has been the latest victim of the injury bug. He was diagnosed with a bone spur in his pitching elbow and was placed on the DL retroactive to March 27.

There is not a set timetable for his return as it depends on how the Yankees approach the treatment. They could attempt to rehab it over the next few weeks and see if it recovers, but the likely option is surgery to remove it. Heller would then have to undergo a six week strengthening, which would then be followed by a throwing program, so he could be out of action until the early summer months. Masahiro Tanaka had a similar surgery in the offseason of 2015.

With the Yankees’ 40-man roster taking major blows due to injuries, Heller may be a candidate for the 60-day DL if surgery is indeed necessary. Triple-A relief pitcher, Giovanny Gallegos, will also be starting the season on the DL with a groin injury.
