The Yankees have announced that they have officially acquired outfielder Andrew McCutchen and cash considerations from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for Triple-A shortstop  Abiatal  Avelino and Single-A RHP Juan De Paula. The deal was first reported by Joel Sherman of the NY Post.  I hear if the trade is completed #yankees will be sending two prospects to the #sfgiants for McCutchen and that Abital Avelino is one of them. — Joel Sherman (@Joelsherman1) August 31, 2018 New York, in dire need of outfield help with  Aaron  Judge now shelved for over a month and Shane Robinson hitting under .150 in his place, needed to make a move like this to bolster its roster heading into the final month of the season.  After tonight’s brutal loss to the Tigers, it seems the American League East crown is out of reach, but the Yankees need to ensure they are as strong as possible heading into the AL Wild Card Game.  

Tuesday evening’s matchup saw Lance Lynn (8-9, 4.84 ERA) take the mound for the Yanks against James Shields (5-15, 4.59 ERA). Earlier this month, Lynn made his first start as a Yankee against these same White Sox in Chicago. He was superb, going 7.1 IP, giving up zero runs on two hits and striking out nine batters. On Tuesday, Lynn was not as sharp, but pitched well enough to keep the Yankees in the game. The beginning of this game epitomized the dog days of summer: sluggish, long, tiresome and very little action. The Bombers continued their stretch of abysmal defense, making two more errors in the first three innings. If you thought Greg Bird could not play any worse, you were sadly mistaken as he dropped a ball that was thrown at his chest. The Yankees started off Players Weekend in Baltimore against the Orioles.   The Yankees had southpaw C.C. Sabathia on the mound for the first time since coming off the D.L. while the O’s gave the ball to Alex Cobb. It was a back and forth game, but two home runs in extras propelled the Yankees to victory.

After winning game one of their two-game series against the Marlins Tuesday, the Yankees looked for the sweep with Lance Lynn on the hill. The Yankees were able to turn an August game versus the Marlins into one of the most intense games of the season. The Marlins left the bases loaded twice, in the bottom of the ninth and in the bottom of the eleventh. The Yankees played less than seven innings on Friday night in the Bronx, but it was enough to secure a win due to the rain-shortened game. Lance Lynn pitched his worst start in a Yankees uniform with three walks and five earned runs in just four innings. A massive late-game home run from the American League’s Rookie of the Year favorite propelled the Yankees to a huge 5-3 win over the Texas Rangers.  

The Yankees’ once fearsome, daunting lineup has slowly been deteriorating due to the injury bug. Judge has been out since late-July with a fractured wrist, which is still bothering him, and Stanton has been regulated to only DH’ing due to an ailing hamstring. Judge is still some ways away as he has not been able to swing yet, and Stanton is being used cautiously to avoid any extended missed time. As a result of the Yankees’ plethora of outfielders dealt and these injuries, Aaron Boone has penciled in journeyman Shane Robinson into the Bronx Bombers’ lineup essentially every day. Robinson has started five straight games and ten out of the Yankees’ last fifteen. He’s serviceable on defense and quick, but the bat is almost non-existent. He has a .493 OPS, and the Yankees simply need someone more productive with their division hopes dwindling and the Athletics breathing down their necks for the first Wild Card spot.   Photo Credit: Getty

Fresh off a series sweep in Chicago earlier this  week, the Yankees returned home to kick off a crucial 11 game homestand.  The  Rangers came into this game averaging seven runs per game since the  All-Star  Break, the best in all of baseball.  J.A. Happ made his first start since coming back from the now infamous Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease. It would be Happ’s night as he had the upper hand in this matchup. The Yankees limped into Chicago to kick off their series against the White Sox on Monday having lost five games in a row including an agonizing four-game sweep at the hands of the Boston Red Sox. Even though the Yankees have been struggling of late and they still will likely be without Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez for a few more weeks, they are now entering a favorable part of their schedule and the opportunity to get back on track is within their grasp. When the Yankees signed Neil Walker in mid-March, he was viewed as an insurance policy for three spots: first base, second base and third base. He would bring a consistent, veteran presence to a young, inexperienced infield, as evidenced by his career numbers. Walker entered the season with a career .272 batting average, at least 10 home runs in each of his eight full seasons and he never hit below .250 in any full season. He was the definition of a solid player. At best, he’d be a quality starter, and at worst, he’d be one of the league’s best utility men. The signing seemed like a perfect match…until it didn’t. It is often said that it is extremely difficult to win both games of a doubleheader, no matter how below average the team you are playing is. That has been the case for the Yanks, as they have split all of their doubleheaders this season including the one on Saturday against the Royals, losing the first game 10-5 while edging out the night cap 5-4. It was an eventful day in the Bronx to say the least that saw Severino continue to struggle, Zach Britton lose the strike zone, C.C take a tumble and Neil Walker having his best day as a Yankee. Coming off a strong win last night in which they got a complete game shutout from Masahiro Tanaka, the Yankees sought another series victory in this afternoon's matinee at Tropicana Field.  Gleyber Torres returned to the lineup for the first time since our nation’s birthday, going 0–for-3 with a walk and making a few great defensive plays.  Luis Cessa also returned to the team, making his first start in the rotation in place of the recently demoted Domingo German, pitching very economically with 74 pitches through 5.1 innings and only giving up 2 runs. The offense, on the other hand, gave the Yankee pitcher no help while facing the Rays’ bullpen for the third day in a row and once again, failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities in the ninth inning as the Rays took this one by a count of 3-2. After a disappointing, preventable 7-6 loss last night at Tropicana Field, the Yankees rebounded and won game two against the Tampa Bay Rays. Masahiro Tanaka cruised through the lineup all night, completely shutting out Tampa. This was Tanaka’s first complete game since April 2017. The Yankees dropped yet another game to the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night, 6-5. The returning Masahiro Tanaka faced-off against Andrew  Cashner . Tanaka made his first start since June 8th when he strained both of his hamstrings while running the bases against the Mets. This matchup came with an interesting statistic: for pitchers with at least 10 starts, Tanaka ranked second in the MLB in run support (13 starts; 6.54 runs per game), while  Cashner  ranked dead last (17 starts; 2.59 runs per game). The game began as a pitcher’s duel, with no scoring through the first three innings. In fact,  Cashner  was perfect through the first four. The first runs came with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
