Yankees comeback to win 7-5 in rain-shortened game

The Yankees played less than seven innings on Friday night in the Bronx, but it was enough to secure a win due to the rain-shortened game. Lance Lynn pitched his worst start in a Yankees uniform with three walks and five earned runs in just four innings. Neil Walker and Giancarlo Stanton both hit home runs to propel the Bombers to a game one win against Toronto.

Lynn pitched to the entire Blue Jays’ lineup in the first inning. Three walks and three singles allowed the Jays to score four runs before Lynn could make the third out. However, the Yankees answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first. Didi Gregorius ripped an RBI triple deep to center field, then Miguel Andujar continued his hot hitting, scoring Didi on a double. 

Toronto starter Marcus Stroman struggled just as much as Lynn. In the bottom of the fourth, he gave up the 4-2 lead when Neil Walker hit a three-run homer to right center. Both Gleyber Torres and Greg Bird showed progress before Walker’s home run. Gleyber hit a double and Bird worked the count to walk on a 10-pitch at-bat. Stroman has been incompetent at Yankee Stadium as of late; in his last three New York starts before today, Stroman posted an 0-3 record with an ERA over seven.

Lance Lynn settled down for a few innings but was pulled after surrendering back-to-back hits to lead off the fifth. Curtis Granderson tied the game, 5-5, on an RBI single from Devon Travis, which triggered Boone to step out of the dugout and replace Lynn with Chad Green. He pitched two clean innings. Robertson followed Green and threw a 1-2-3 seventh. 

The Yankees regained the lead on a force-out by Torres that scored Aaron Hicks in the fifth. To lead off the seventh, Giancarlo Stanton hit a 431-foot “Stantonian blast” to extend the Yankees’ lead to two. Immediately following a Hicks strikeout, the grounds crew rolled out the tarp as an incoming storm approached the Bronx. 

 After over an hour of delay, the game was called, giving the Yankees a much-needed win.

What’s Next?
The Yankees will send out Luis Severino (15-6, 3.27 ERA) to face off against 22-year-old Sean Reid-Foley (0-1, 5.40 ERA) in game two of this series. Reid-Foley will be making his second career start tomorrow in the Bronx at 1:05 PM ET.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
