Jacob deGrom(6-7, 1.77 ERA) vs Luis
Severino (15-5, 3.11 ERA)
The Mets are coming off a series victory down in Miami,
while the Yankees are coming off a four game series victory against the Texas
Rangers, part of a 11 game home stand.
Jacob deGrom will be pitching for the New York…. Mets. After much uncertainty with the rumors deGrom
and Syndergard would be traded, with some rumors linking them to the Yankees,
deGrom will square off against the Yankees Ace Luis Severino.
Jacob deGrom has pitched lights out this year, leading all
of MLB with a 1.77 ERA. However, he is on
the Mets, who have not given him the run support he needs. In July, they only gave him 10 runs of
support, while he only surrendered six runs in four starts, which resulted in
two no-decisions (team eventually won both), a 3-2 loss to the San Diego Padres
(NL worst, 4th worst in all of MLB), and 5-0 loss to the Pirates.
However in August, his team has given him nine runs of
support in two starts, unfortunately eight of those were in the romp of the
Reds in his last start, while the only run of support against the Braves
resulted in a loss for deGrom. He could
be potentially be the first CY Young winner with a below .500 win %. He looks
to pick up the win against a Yankees team who has won their last six of seven
games.
Batters to watch for:
Giancarlo Stanton: There has been no one hotter as of late
than Stanton. In his last 10 games, he’s
batting .308, slugging .744, has hit five homers, 10 RBI, and put together an
OPS of 1.144. Those stats along with his
lifetime career stats against deGrom (.360 BA, four HR, .880 SLG, and 1.309
OPS) make him someone to watch against deGrom.
Miguel Andujar: Even though he doesn’t have any hits off
deGrom (only three AB), Miggy has been on a role lately, separating himself
from the pack for rookie of the year. In
his last 10 games, he’s batting .308, slugging .641, has four HR, and an OPS of
.998. Both him and Stanton have stepped
up in the absence of Judge and Sanchez.
Luis Severino has been the Yankees’ ace all year long. He gladly put the team on his shoulders
throughout the first half, and maybe, just maybe he is bearing the consequences
of that. In his last four starts since
the break, he has pitched to a 7.77 ERA, going 1-3 in that time frame. Fortunately, it seems he is finding his
way. In his last start, he pitched seven
strong innings, only allowing three runs, down from his previous three starts
in which he allowed six, six, and four respectively. He will look to continue
to build on his momentum against a Mets team he has had success against. In two starts against them, he has only given
up three runs in 11.1 innings. The Mets don’t usually support deGrom as
previously stated, so this is a game the Bombers should win.
Batters to watch for:
Todd Frazier: The last time Sevy pitched against the Mets,
it was a former Yankee that took him deep, ultimately winning the game for
them. In eight career PA, The Toddfather
is batting .500, 1 HR, slugging 1.000, and an OPS of 1.625.
Brandon Nimmo: The lone bright spot in all the chaos that
has happened in Queens, has to be Brandon Nimmo. The youngster has a BA of
.245, 14 HR, and a .835 OPS. With only four PA against Sevy, Nimmo has posted a
more than respectable .667 BA, .667 SLG, and an OPS of 1.417. Lately he has been in a funk, so this could go
either way in today’s matchup.
