Andujar, Voit power Yanks to 5-3 win, sweep of Orioles

On Sunday Night Baseball, the Yankees defeated the Orioles, 5-3, at a vacant Camden Yards, to finish off a four-game weekend sweep. More importantly, the Yanks managed to pick up 4.5 games on the suddenly stumbling Boston Red Sox over the last week. After tonight, the Yankees are now five back of Boston in the loss column. The division is not over just yet, folks.

Luis Severino was on the mound for the Yankees tonight and once again didn’t quite look like himself. While he allowed only two runs over 5.2 innings, that says more about the hapless Orioles than it does Severino. The velocity was there, but once again his command was off and he couldn’t put hitters away with his usual ease. If the Yankees are going to play deep into October, he needs to be better than he was tonight. Nonetheless, he got the job done and that’s what matters for now. Additionally, it was the 24-year-old right-hander's MLB-leading 17th win of the season. Chad Green, Zach Britton and David Robertson finished off the game with 3.1 scoreless innings of relief.

Offensively, the Yankees were led by their two hottest hitters: Miguel Andujar and Luke Voit. Voit got the scoring started in the second inning with a two-run blast to right field. It was the third home run of the weekend for Voit, who, after going 3-3 tonight, has almost certainly earned himself at least a timeshare at first base with the slumping Greg Bird. The Yanks tacked on two more in the third when Andujar ripped his 37th double of the season. Andujar is hitting a ridiculous .357 with an OPS of .979 since the All-Star break. The final run of the night came across in the sixth when Brett Gardner scored on a wild pitch by Cody Carroll. Of note is that Giancarlo Stanton is still stuck on 299 career home runs after striking out four times tonight.
What’s Next?
The Yankees head back to New York for their second-to-last home stand of the season to take on the Chicago White Sox. The probable starting pitching matchup is Masahiro Tanaka (9-4, 3.90 ERA) for New York and Carlos Rodon (5-3, 2.71 ERA) for Chicago. The game can be seen on YES and ESPN starting at 7:05pm.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
