Walker and Voit lead Yankees to extra inning victory in Baltimore

The Yankees started off Players Weekend in Baltimore against the Orioles.  The Yankees had southpaw C.C. Sabathia on the mound for the first time since coming off the D.L. while the O’s gave the ball to Alex Cobb. It was a back and forth game, but two home runs in extras propelled the Yankees to victory.
Sabathia didn’t get off to a smooth start. In the bottom of the first, Cedric Mullins, and Jonathon Villar started off the game with singles, and one out later C.C. walked Trey Mancini to load the bases. Chris Davis then hit a ground ball that got through the right side of the infield, and scored two runs. Sabathia was able to get out of it after that though by striking out Tim Beckham, and Renato Nunez to end the inning.

Coming into this game Alex Cobb had been lights out in three consecutive starts, giving up just four runs in his last 23 innings. Cobb was good again tonight going six innings allowing just two runs. His one mistake came in the fourth inning, when with Neil Walker on first, Luke Voit blasted a ball 403 foot bomb to left-center field for his first home run as a Yankee. The game was tied 2-2.

After the first inning, C.C. was dominant, throwing five scoreless innings and only allowing two hits. In the end, he gave the Yankees a quality start, allowing just the two runs in six innings, while striking out eight.
David Robertson entered the game for the Yankees in the seventh, and allowed two unearned runs. Orioles left fielder John Andreoli led off the inning with a groundball to short that was booted by Gleyber Torres, which allowed him to reach. Robertson got the next two batters out, but Jonathon Villar blasted a home run to left field, which gave Baltimore a 4-2 lead.

The Yankees rallied in the eighth though, tying the game back up. Giancarlo Stanton started the inning with his third walk of the game, and after an Aaron Hicks strikeout the Yankees got a little  lucky. Miguel Andujar and Neil Walker hit back to back bloop singles to load the bases for Gleyber Torres, who also blooped one into right field. Stanton easily scored, and Andujar was also waved home. The throw by Adam Jones beat him there, but the ball popped out of Austin Wynn’s glove, and Andujar was called safe to tie the game at 4. With nobody scoring again until in the eighth or ninth the game headed to extras.

In the top of the tenth, the Orioles went to former Yankee Cody Carroll, who was part of the Zach Britton trade. With one out Neil Walker hit a deep home run into right center field to give the Yankees a 5-4 lead, and after a Gleyber Torres walk, Luke Voit connected for his second two-run homer un of the game to put the Yankees up 7-4. Britton then made his debut against his former team, and closed the game out, despite giving up a solo shot to Chris Davis, to give the Yankees their 80th win of the year.

What’s Next?
The Yankees will play a doubleheader against the Orioles tomorrow. Game one will feature J.A. Happ against Jimmy Yacabonis. In game two Sonny Gray will be starting for the Yankees and Andrew Cashner will get the ball for the O’s.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
