Didi Gregorius placed on the 10-day DL, Luke Voit recalled; here is how it affects the everyday lineup
The Yankees officially announced this morning that SS
Didi Gregorius will be placed on 10-day DL with a left heel contusion. Luke
Voit will take his place on the active roster.
Losing Sir Didi is a huge blow to an offense that is
already without Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez in the middle of the order. While his injury isn't going to sideline him for the long-term, it will still further hurt one of the league's best offenses. His
injury will lead to Gleyber Torres shifting over to shortstop, and Neil Walker
and Ronald Torreyes taking over at second base. Boone confirmed this is how the
infield would play out a few hours ago.
Walker’s increased playing time in the infield will
mean one of two things. Either Shane Robinson will become the everyday right
fielder, or Stanton will have to try to play through his sore hamstring in the
outfield. With three impact bats out, it is very hard to justify jeopardizing
Stanton playing in the field when he isn’t 100%. If the Yankees don’t make a
move for another outfielder, expect to see a lot of Robinson.
Voit’s call up is a little questionable as it would
have made more sense if they brought up the versatile Tyler Wade. Wade has
looked solid in the outfield for Scranton and would be a major improvement over
Robinson’s bat. The Yankees face two southpaws in the Miami series, so they see
Voit as a possibility to start and definitely as pinch-hitter in the later
innings.
