Justus Sheffield moved to bullpen in Triple-A, primed for September call-up

The Railriders scratched Justus Sheffield from his start today and have announced that he is being moved to the bullpen. While typically this is meant for someone who is struggling and not performing to expectations, this is a different scenario. This move will not only monitor Sheffield’s innings for him so he can contribute down the stretch, but it will allow him to adapt to a new role the Yankees plan on using him in when September 1 arrives.

Sheffield has been a force in the minors for the Yankees Double-A and Triple-A teams in 2018. He has a 2.48 ERA in 108.2 IP (17 away from his career-high) with 116 strikeouts and a 1.17 WHIP. Many believed he could be a starter down the line for the Yankees in 2018, but Lance Lynn and JA Happ have solidified themselves as solid starters in the backend of the rotation. As a result, the Yankees envision Sheffield as a reliever where his stuff can play up, and he can get accustomed to the big-league level.

Brian Cashman was quoted earlier this month saying he believed Justus Sheffield would be an impact arm in the Bronx this season, and this move to the bullpen in Scranton all but solidifies that claim.
