Yankee bats come to life, take game one of doubleheader

Having won five of their last six games, the Yankees looked to stay hot in game one of a Saturday double-header in Camden Yards. J.A. Happ took the hill for the Yanks and secured his fifth win in five starts with his new club. Happ ran into some trouble early, but the Yankee bats didn’t need any help today. They put a ten spot on the Orioles behind Miguel Andujar’s four RBI. The Yankees topped the O’s 10-2.

 New York got on the board before the O’s even came to the plate. A walk and doubled paired with a fielder’s choice brought in Giancarlo Stanton for the first run of the game. Baltimore duplicated this in the bottom of the second, but Renato Nunez gave them a single to center that plated two.

The Yankees came back firing in the third. A Shane Robinson single started a rally of walks and hits that left Miguel Andujar up with two runners on. He crushed a ball to dead centerfield, putting the Yankees up 5-2.

 That was all J.A. Happ needed as he bounced back from the bottom of the second to go four more scoreless innings, giving up just two hits over that span. Happ finished with a line of 6 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 9 K on 107 pitches.

The Yankees, on the other hand, were not done scoring. Shane Robinson’s second hit of the night gave Brett Gardner an extra RBI as Gardy went deep just three pitches later. Luke Voit stayed hot, plating Miguel Andujar on a single to left in the top of the fifth. Just like that it was 8-2.

With a six run lead, Aaron Boone threw out Luis Cessa to pitch hoping he could eat up the last three innings being mindful of the game later tonight. Cessa got the job done. He allowed two hits over the three innings in his best appearance as a Yankee since July ninth.

Gleyber Torres and Aaron Hicks added solo homers in the eighth and ninth innings respectively closing out a 10-2 win.

Aaron Hicks: 3-for-5, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2B, HR.
Miguel Andujar: 2-for-5, 2 R, 4 RBI, HR.

What’s Next?
In less than three hours the Yankees will take the field in game two of a double-header in Baltimore. A W would secure a series win for the Bombers. Sonny Gray will take the hill against the O’s Andrew Cashner. This game is a makeup for the June third rainout.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason.
