Big games by Gregorius, Stanton back up Sabathia in 7-2 win over Rangers

The Yankees delivered a dominating performance Sunday afternoon to top the Texas Rangers 7-2 and finish off a four-game series win. With the win, New York is once again a season-high 31 games over .500, but they trail the historically good Boston Red Sox by 9.5 games in the AL East.

The game got started with a bang for the Yankees as Giancarlo Stanton’s impressive power surge continued with a laser solo shot in the first inning. The home run was Stanton’s 30th on the season and his fifth in the last six games. Stanton has really picked up the slack since Aaron Judge went on the shelf. After a few quiet innings, the offense exploded for five runs in the fifth. The big blow came off the bat of Didi Gregorius, who sent his 21st home run of the year into the right field seats to make it 6-0. It was a big game for the Yankees shortstop, as he flashed the leather throughout, including a dazzling play to retire Delino Deshields in the top of the fifth (see below). Aside from Gregorius and Stanton, Aaron Hicks and Brett Gardner each had two hits and drove in three combined runs.
On the mound, CC Sabathia came through with his best start in over a month by blanking the Rangers over six innings. Sabathia struck out seven and allowed only one hit on the day. After a rough stretch of starts in July where he pitched to a 5.60 ERA, Sabathia allowed one run over 11.2 innings in two starts this week. He will look to carry that momentum into his next start against Toronto on Friday. Sonny Gray followed the big man and had a pretty brutal afternoon. Gray served up five hits and two runs in an inning plus of work before leaving to a showering of boos from the Yankee Stadium faithful. After his encouraging work in Chicago earlier this week, today was more of what we’ve come to expect from Sonny. Jonathan Holder came in to clean up Gray’s mess and needed 44 pitches to fire two scoreless frames and finish off a nice team win.

What’s Next?
Subway Series Part III. Tomorrow night the Yanks will make up a rainout from July 22nd against the rival New York Mets. It’s a marquee pitching matchup with Luis Severino (15-5, 3.11 ERA) taking on Jacob DeGrom (6-7, 1.77 ERA). The Bombers will need a solid outing from their ace to win the season series against the Mets. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm and the game can be seen exclusively on ESPN.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
