All-around sloppy game snaps Yankees four-game win streak

On ESPN for the second consecutive night, the Yanks let go of a 2-0 lead in the middle innings against another lowly team in the Chicago White Sox. The offense was virtually nonexistent in the 6-2 loss at Yankee Stadium in a poor outing by Masahiro Tanaka.

At first, Masahiro Tanaka looked great once again and continued his nice second half turnaround. He was through five scoreless innings while allowing just five hits and racking up seven strikeouts before the wheels fell off a bit in the sixth inning. After getting a popout to start out the inning, he allowed two infield singles and a walk just in a string of three batters. Although a bit of bad luck, Tanaka still wasn’t able to get out of it without any damage done. Yoan Moncada’s two-run double tied things up and made it four consecutive batters that reached base against the righty. Nicky Delmonico followed up with a sac fly to give the White Sox a 3-2 lead. 

 Tanaka’s average outing was just his second disappointing one in his last eight starts. On the positive side of things, he was just tremendous his first five innings and ended up giving the Yankees length of seven innings. Tanaka was pretty effective as well, as he had just 98 pitches in those innings. His overall line in this one though was seven innings, giving up 10 hits and four runs and striking out seven. Tommy Kahnle pitched a promising, efficient eighth inning before AJ Cole allowed another two runs in the ninth inning, putting the game out of hand for the offense to mount a comeback in the bottom half of the ninth.



On the offensive side of things, it was a bit quiet going for the Yanks but a two-run homer from rookie Gleyber Torres in the fourth propelled them to a 2-0 lead. The homer was another encouraging sign from Torres who has been heating up over the past week or so and looking more like the guy we saw the first half of the season. Other than that homer though, the Yanks had just two other hits and no runs, totaling three hits and two runs on the offensive side for the game. Embarrassingly, the Yanks' number of hits equaled the amount of errors they had on the defensive side. Granted the Yankees were facing a pitcher who is on a hot streak in Carlos Rodon, but it was still a disappointing performance after sweeping the Orioles this past weekend.

What’s Next?
The Yankees will try to avenge tonight’s loss tomorrow at 7:05 PM ET with Lance Lynn (8-9, 4.84 ERA) on the mound facing veteran right-hander James Shields (5-15, 4.59 ERA).

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
