Yankees win nail-biter in the 12th, 2-1 against Miami

The Yankees were able to turn an August game versus the Marlins into one of the most intense games of the season. The Marlins left the bases loaded twice, in the bottom of the ninth and in the bottom of the eleventh. Both teams had ample opportunities to break out and failed miserably, but the Yankees eventually came out on top in the twelfth.

The Yankees scored first as Neil Walker drove in Miguel Andujar with a base-hit in the fourth inning. This was the only offense the Yankees were able to muster versus the Marlins through the game's first 11 innings. 

The Marlins tied the Yankees in the fifth as Austin Dean hit his second home run of the season. It was the only blemish for what was a solid start for Masahiro Tanaka. Tanaka went six innings allowing one run on four hits while striking out four.

After a failed opportunity to score in the ninth for the Yankees, Chad Green played with fire in the bottom of the inning. A walk and a single set up first and third with nobody out for the Marlins. Chad Green struck out Derek Dietrich, but then proceeded to intentionally walk Starlin Castro to load the bases for the Marlins. Green buckled down, however, and struck out two consecutive hitters to send the game into extras.

The Marlins created a similar situation in the eleventh as AJ Cole was on the mound with bases loaded and nobody out. Like Green, he somehow maneuvered his way around the threat and kept the game knotted at one.

The Yankees finally broke through for their second run of the game in the twelfth as Miguel Andujar launched a sac-fly to left that scored Kyle Higashioka. However, the bottom half of the inning was just as suspenseful as the ninth and eleventh. Chapman started the inning but only lasted 1+ hitters as he left with an injury. The Yankees decided to bring in Kahnle with a runner on first and nobody out. He was able to shut the door with some help from Higashioka, who threw out a runner stealing at second to end the suspenseful game.

What’s Next?
The Yankees will send Lance Lynn to the mound in game two to try to secure a two-game sweep, and the Marlins will pitch Trevor Richards. First pitch is set for 7:10 PM.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
