Porcello dominates, Pearce homers again as Yankees lose 4-1

The night got off to a fiery start, when Yankees leadoff man Brett Gardner was hit in the arm by a pitch from Boston started Rick Porcello. Then, in the bottom of the first, Yankees starter Luis Severino buzzed a pitch high and inside to Mookie Betts. Home plate umpire Adam Hamari warned Severino as well as both dugouts, but delayed a bit in doing so, drawing the ire of Red Sox manager Alex Cora, who charged out of the dugout to protest and was summarily ejected. After a double from Andrew Benintendi, Steve Pearce continued his torrid hitting streak and mashed his fourth home run in the last two games, which rattled off the light tower on top of the Green Monster to give the Red Sox a 2-0 lead. The damage didn’t stop there, as Eduardo Nunez blooped a single to shallow right field to score Ian Kinsler. Kinsler ended up leaving the game after that play, leading to Betts replacing him at second and Pearce moving to right field.

The Bombers got on the board and in the hit column thanks to Miguel Andujar, who crushed a solo homer in the top of the third. Severino continued to struggle, missing locations and generally laboring throughout, and Boston added another run through Mitch Moreland’s single in the bottom of the fifth that snuck under the glove of Gleyber Torres, continuing the trend of lackadaisical defense by the Yankees over the last few games. Severino was pulled with two outs in the sixth, and it’s worth noting he’d vastly improved over his last two or so innings. David Robertson entered in relief for the end of the sixth and seventh, then Tommy Kahnle made his return from AAA and worked a scoreless eighth. Porcello, meanwhile, cruised after the Andujar homer, and sat down every Yankee hitter consecutively en route to a one-hit complete game.

Boston extends their lead in the AL East to seven and a half games. These next two games are the definition of must-win if the Yankees want to retain even a hope of staying in this division race.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
