The surrounding factors change, creating different situations and, as such, different fits -- both from a financial and from a team standpoint. Let’s get one thing straight: tonight was the most mismanaged postseason game in New York Yankees history. Was Joe Girardi’s non-challenge in Cleveland horrible last year? Yes. Was this worse? Absolutely. Girardi’s decision cost his team four runs, Boone’s decision to leave Luis Severino in two innings too long cost his team upwards of nine runs. Boone has often been unfairly criticized in his first year at the helm of the Yankees, but he deserves everything he is going to get for this atrocity. A very disappointing home stand ended Sunday as the Yankees fell to the Tigers, 11-7, to split their four-game series with Detroit. The Yankees were presented with a golden opportunity to make up more ground on Boston this week, but instead went 3-4 against the lowly White Sox and Tigers. The Yankees will welcome the Detroit Tigers into the Bronx for a four-game weekend series. The clubs split a pair of games in Detroit back in June. New York is coming off a series loss to the White Sox where they only combined for three runs in their two losses. Nonetheless, the Yankees have won nine of their last 12 games. They currently sit 7.5 games back of the Red Sox in the AL East, but 4.5 up in the Wild Card. At this point, it's pretty safe to assume this club will be hosting a one-game playoff. This four-game set with the Tigers gives the Yankees a chance to bounce back and put three or four more wins on the board.

Tuesday evening’s matchup saw Lance Lynn (8-9, 4.84 ERA) take the mound for the Yanks against James Shields (5-15, 4.59 ERA). Earlier this month, Lynn made his first start as a Yankee against these same White Sox in Chicago. He was superb, going 7.1 IP, giving up zero runs on two hits and striking out nine batters. On Tuesday, Lynn was not as sharp, but pitched well enough to keep the Yankees in the game. The beginning of this game epitomized the dog days of summer: sluggish, long, tiresome and very little action. The Bombers continued their stretch of abysmal defense, making two more errors in the first three innings. If you thought Greg Bird could not play any worse, you were sadly mistaken as he dropped a ball that was thrown at his chest. The Yankees have gotten hot again. They just swept a four game series with the Orioles, and have won eight of their last nine games. The Red Sox on the other hand have lost six of their last eight, and are currently only six games ahead of the Yankees. The Yankees are now back in the Bronx, and will be playing the White Sox, trying to keep some pressure on Boston in the AL East. The White Sox are in fourth place in the AL Central, and are 28 games under .500. The Yankees already swept the White Sox earlier this month, and that should be the goal again against one of the worst teams in baseball.

The Yankees are coming off a nice three-game sweep of their division foe Toronto Blue Jays, while the Marlins are coming off a series victory over playoff contending Washington Nationals.   The last time these two met in early April, they split a two-game series, both games lopsided affairs. This left the Yankees at 8-8, good for third place in their division. Since that point, they have been the second best team in baseball, only the Red Sox have a better record.   The Yankees will be facing off against a pair of rookies, with no prior starts against them.

The Yankees played less than seven innings on Friday night in the Bronx, but it was enough to secure a win due to the rain-shortened game. A massive late-game home run from the American League’s Rookie of the Year favorite propelled the Yankees to a huge 5-3 win over the Texas Rangers.  

The Yankees limped into Chicago to kick off their series against the White Sox on Monday having lost five games in a row including an agonizing four-game sweep at the hands of the Boston Red Sox. Even though the Yankees have been struggling of late and they still will likely be without Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez for a few more weeks, they are now entering a favorable part of their schedule and the opportunity to get back on track is within their grasp. Coming off the most gut wrenching and frustrating series of the year, the Yankees will travel to the South side of Chicago to take on the White Sox. The Yankees currently sit 9.5 games back of the Red Sox in the AL East and have seen their Wild Card lead diminish to just 2.5 games. It is just a matter of time before this team finds their groove again, and hopefully a series win versus the 41-70 White Sox will put them on the right track.

After what seemed like an eternity of Sonny Gray pitching out of the rotation, despite immense struggles, reports flooded in around 4pm today that Gray had been informed that he had lost his spot in the Yankee rotation to the newly acquired Lance Lynn. Brian Cashman informed the media on a WFAN appearance. Gray sealed the deal after he was bombarded by a terrible Orioles lineup for what most called his worst start of the season. In another surprising move, the Yankees have acquired RHP Lance Lynn and money to help pay for his contract in exchange for first baseman Tyler Austin and 19-year-old starting pitcher Luis Rijo. The Yankees have reportedly “checked in” on Lance Lynn, Yu Darvish, and Jaime Garcia, while they also continue to closely monitor Sonny Gray. Well before the start of the 2017 season, the New York Yankees had many questions about their roster. Last season, a major strength of the Yankees was their bullpen. After some late season acquisitions (getting Adam Warren back, and trading for Tyler Clippard) the bullpen seemed to be rounding into form. After winning a World Series with the Cubs, Aroldis Chapman got his wish and resigned with the Yankees. The strength of this team remains the same, if a starter can get to the sixth or better yet the seventh inning, the game should be over. What about the rest of the team? The Yankees this season have a great mix of veteran talent, and youth. Unlike the last couple of seasons which have been tough to watch, through 13 games this team has a different buzz. Veterans such as Jacoby Ellsbury, Matt Holliday and CC Sabathia are showing the kids what it takes to be in the majors, but you have to believe the kids are teaching the vets how to have fun and enjoy the game again.
