Breaking: Yankees acquire Lance Lynn and cash considerations in exchange for Tyler Austin and Luis Rijo
In
another surprising move, the Yankees have acquired RHP Lance Lynn and money to help pay for his contract in exchange
for first baseman Tyler Austin and 19-year-old starting pitcher Luis Rijo. The
move was confirmed by Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman and first reported by Peter
Sazon.
Lynn, 31, is in the midst of his worst season in the majors. He has a 0.0 WAR, 1.63 WHIP, and a 5.10 ERA. His last four starts have been encouraging, however, as he has a 3.68 ERA and a .235 BAA. Lynn figures to provide starting pitching depth, similarly to Jaime Garcia in 2017, but true intentions of the move are a little fuzzy at the moment. The Yankees could opt to go for a six-man rotation to ease the stress on some of their other starting pitchers.
Tyler
Austin filled in nicely for the injured Greg Bird, but the Yankees clearly see
Bird as their guy over Austin. Austin had a .751 OPS in 34 games. Austin will
likely get more playing time on a rebuilding Twins team. He will always be
remembered for the Boston Brawl with Joe Kelly.
Rijo
is only 19, but is not amongst the Yankees’ top 30 prospects. He has a 3.45
career ERA in 125.1 IP in the lower levels of the minors.
