Breaking: Yankees acquire All-Star LHP JA Happ for Brandon Drury and Billy McKinney

In what has turned out to be a busy week for the Yankees and Brian Cashman, they have acquired left-hander J.A. Happ from the Toronto Blue Jays, as confirmed by Jon Heyman. The Blue Jays will receive IF Brandon Drury and OF Billy McKinney in return.

Happ will likely slide into the backend of the Yankees rotation, adding another lefty arm, as well as a veteran presence and some playoff experience. With the back of the Yankees rotation seemingly a revolving door this year after Jordan Montgomery went down, Happ will look to add some consistency to the staff. While there has been some concern with Happ’s recent outings (a reason his price tag has come down from a month ago), he has shown that he can handle the AL East and does own a career 7-4 record with a 2.98 ERA against the Boston Red Sox, the team that the Yankees have been chasing and factor to see in October.

Brandon Drury began the year for the Yankees as the starting third baseman, but an extended time on the DL opened the door to rookie Miguel Andujar and he took off running with the starting job. Since being activated from the DL, the Yankees just didn’t have a full-time spot for Drury and he was only used to fill in for guys on rest days. While he still can play on the major league level, the fact of the matter was there was not a spot for him in the Bronx. Drury owns a .176 batting average with one home run and seven RBIs in the 18 games played this year.

Billy McKinney originally came over to the Yankees in 2016 with the Aroldis Chapman trade, and has primarily been in AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Currently listed as the Yankees number 20 prospect, he did see two games at the major league level, before a left shoulder injury made his stay brief. In the 54 games he has played this year in AAA, he owns a .230 average with 13 HRs and 32 RBIs. While McKinney’s departure may sting some, being he showed real promise when he was called up, the fact is that the outfield of the Yankees is a logjam and Clint Frazier is first in line to get the call-up, so it would have likely been a long shot for him to crack the roster in the near future.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason.
