Missed opportunities cause Yankees to lose game one against Braves in extras

After a series win against the Boston Red Sox, the Yankees began a three-game set with the Atlanta Braves at Yankee Stadium. Jonathan Loaisiga could not do enough as the Yankees lost 5-3 after 11 innings against veteran Anibal Sanchez, who was 4-0 with a 2.39 ERA against the Yanks in the Bronx entering today.

The action began early for both teams. The Yankees, who came off of a six-homer night against Boston, scored on a big fly from Judge to right field in the first, giving the Bombers an early 1-0 lead. The Braves answered back with a solo shot of their own, as Johan Camargo launched his eighth homer of the season. However, the back and forth didn’t end there. In the third, a pair of wild pitches allowed Gleyber Torres to advance to third and eventually score. Back-to-back-to-back doubles by Nick Markakis, Kurt Suzuki, and Ronald Acuna Jr. brought the score back in favor of Atlanta. 

The Yankees had an opportunity to take back the lead in the fifth inning with the bases loaded and one out. A sac-fly from Didi Gregorius tied it up at three, but they were not able to break the game open. Anibal Sanchez ended his night after six frames, allowing six hits but only three runs to this Yankee lineup. The game remained tied through the 10th inning.  

Loaisiga finished his outing with only four innings pitched and three earned runs. Stellar bullpen performances by Jonathan Holder, Chad Green, Aroldis Chapman, and Dellin Betances kept the Yankees in the game. However, the Yankees’ inability to score with runners in scoring position led to David Robertson giving up a two-run homer to Acuna Jr. in the 11th. 24-year-old A.J. Minter closed out the game for Atlanta. 

What’s Next? 
Game two of this series will see Domingo German, who last started a game on June 24th. His previous outing only lasted three innings and included seven hits and six earned runs. For Atlanta, 25-year-old Sean Newcomb takes the mound. Newcomb is 8-2 on the season with an ERA of just 2.71. Tune in for the first pitch on YES at 7:05 PM ET.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
