MLB Trade Rumors: Tyler Skaggs and Andrew Heaney are on the Yankees’ radar

Per Jon Morosi of MLB.com, the Yankees have been heavily scouting the Angels pitching staff and could turn to them for pitching help, if the Angels decide to sell at the trade deadline. Southpaws, Tyler Skaggs and Andrew Heaney, are the two pitchers in particular that the Yankees would inquire on. The Angels’ GM, Billy Eppler, worked together with Brian Cashman in the Yankees’ front office only three years ago. This relationship along with his knowledge on the Yankees’ farm system creates an ideal trade situation.

Skaggs, 27, is in the midst of a career year with the Angels. While his career ERA of 4.11 is nothing special, he was a top-ten prospect in all of baseball before his debut with the Diamondbacks, and he is finally cutting down on his walks, which is likely why he has improved his performance. Overall this season, Skaggs has accumulated a 2.6 WAR in 98 innings and has allowed only eight home runs to go along with his 2.57 ERA.

Heaney, also 27, is having his first healthy season since 2015. While some of his stats aren’t as solid as Skaggs’, (he has a 3.84 ERA, 0.6 WAR, and has allowed 12 home runs), his peripherals are actually on par with Skaggs as he has a similar walk rate, strikeout rate and WHIP.

Both Skaggs and Heaney would be major upgrades to the Yankees’ backend of their rotation, but what matters now is whether or not the Angels throw in the towel for the 2018 season, and make these two lefties available.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason.
