Report: Yankees interested in LHP’s Zach Britton and Brad Hand

According to the all-knowing Jon Heyman the Yankees have shown interest in left handed relievers Zach Britton of the Orioles and Brad Hand of the Padres. While the Yankees biggest need seems to be starting pitching the idea of adding a solid reliever or two to form a super bullpen alongside Aroldis Chapman, Dellin Betances and Chad Green is quite the intriguing idea.

We know how much the Yankees brass values their young prospects so it’s doubtful they will want to give up top tier talent for a front of the line rotation pitcher. This is where the logic of going after a reliever makes perfect sense. Britton seemingly will cost less but at this moment Hand is definitely the better of the two pitchers.

Brad Hand currently serves as the closer for the last place Padres, who sit 12.5 games behind the first place Diamondbacks. Hand comes into play today (July 8th) with a 1-4 record and a ERA of 3.05 and has converted 24 saves. He would be a marvelous addition to the Yankees pen and as a lefty the team could rid themselves of Chasen Shreve who has been less than pleasurable to watch this season. However, the Padres and their GM AJ Preller are known to have a high asking price for their guys. I doubt the team would give up what San Diego is asking for.

Britton is in a somewhat similar situation as the Orioles are 450 games behind both the Yankees and Red Sox in the AL East. Britton is coming off major injury and has only pitched in 11 games this season to a miserable 5.06 ERA. He is, however, just two year removed from leading the American League in saves and being considered one of if not the most dominating pitcher in the game. Despite his struggles this year I think Britton is the guy to go for and hope he regains his old form. The Orioles obviously won’t be thrilled about dealing him within the division but the Yankees have the pieces to make a deal work. Baltimore needs to go into full rebuild and it makes no sense for them to hang onto their valuable pieces such as Britton, Manny Machado and Adam Jones.

Brian Cashman has his phone ready, lets make a deal!
