Another strong Tanaka outing, timely hitting leads Yankees over Orioles 6-3

Fresh off a series win against the Kansas City Royals, the Yankees took on the Baltimore Orioles in the Bronx Tuesday night but it was a much different Orioles team than they had faced so far this season. The Orioles moved several key players before Tuesday’s trade deadline, including Yankee killers Manny Machado and Jonathan Schoop. Despite some struggles by the bullpen in the later innings, this depleted Orioles team was no match for the Yankees, who grabbed a 6-3 win on Tuesday.

Coming off a dominating shutout performance against the Tampa Bay Rays last time out, Masahiro Tanaka took the mound and looked like he might have a rough night. Tanaka threw 31 pitches in the first inning but held the O’s scoreless. The Yankees took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Gleyber Torres. They would add another run to make the score 2-0 in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Didi Gregorius.

After his rough first inning, Tanaka settled down and held the O’s scoreless for six innings before departing. That is two straight scoreless starts by Tanaka, who has pitched 17 consecutive scoreless innings. While he was doing that, The Yankees offense tacked on more runs in the fifth inning. The Yankees would load the bases with nobody out in the frame before a Greg Bird sacrifice fly brought home the Yankees third run of the night. The next batter was Miguel Andujar, who launched a homer into the left field seats to make the score 6-0.

After being held down all night, the Orioles would finally get on the scoreboard in the eighth inning. With AJ Cole on mound, the O’s put two men on before a Jace Peterson double brought them around to score. Dellin Betances would enter the game and after an error by Andujar at third allowed Peterson to come around to score, Betances settled down to escape the inning with the score at 6-3. Aroldis Chapman struck out the side in the ninth inning to seal the win and earn the save.

What's Next?
With a big weekend series against the Boston Red Sox looming, the Yankee will finish up this quick two game set against the Orioles Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is 1:05 pm on the YES Network and the probable starters are Sonny Gray (8-7, 5.08 ERA) and Alex Cobb (2-14, 6.08 ERA)
