Masahiro Tanaka impresses on the mound in complete game shutout against Tampa Bay

After a disappointing, preventable 7-6 loss last night at Tropicana Field, the Yankees rebounded and won game two against the Tampa Bay Rays. Masahiro Tanaka cruised through the lineup all night, completely shutting out Tampa. This was Tanaka’s first complete game since April 2017. Brandon Drury left the game with a left hand contusion in the fifth, but most importantly, the Yankees were able to even up the series.

 The Yanks were eager to score early tonight, taking a 1-0 lead in the first on a ground out by Didi Gregorius, scoring Brett Gardner from third base. The game was relatively uneventful until the fifth inning. In the top of the frame, Drury was hit in the hand by Tampa’s starter, Yonny Chirinos. After a single by Neil Walker, Drury was replaced by Tyler Wade. Wade scored on Austin Romine’s ground out to third. 

The seventh inning brought another run to the Yankees. Andujar singled, followed by a double from Greg bird. Austin Romine, who started today’s game after Gary Sanchez’s awful performance and injury last night, scored Andujar on a sac fly. Chih-Wei Hu entered with two outs to retire Brett Gardner. Hu finished the game for Tampa, but not without giving up an earned run. He allowed an RBI single to Walker after a double by Andujar in the ninth to make the score 4-0. 

Masahiro Tanaka could not have been more dominant tonight. He pitched a perfect game through four innings. His only trouble came in the fifth with two on and no outs, but he escaped on a strikeout and double play. Tanaka limited the opposing team to just three hits all night. He completed the game in 105 pitches, giving the bullpen some extra rest. 

Tanaka’s Final Line: 9.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 9 SO

What’s Next?
The Yankees will try to win the series against Tampa Bay tomorrow with Luis Cessa (1-1 3.00 ERA) as the starting pitcher. For the Rays, former Yankee and current potential trade target Nathan Eovaldi (3-4, 4.26 ERA) will take the mound. Watch on YES at 12:10 PM ET.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
