Four Yankees named to the American League All-Star Team

The Yankees have the second-best record in Major League Baseball, and as a result, will be well represented at this year’s Midsummer Classic. The Yankees had four players selected to the team. Here is all

Aaron Judge (Second ASG Selection, starting)
Judge will be starting his second consecutive ASG in the OF for the American League. Judge is more than worthy of this nod as he is fifth among AL position players in WAR and carries a .970 OPS to go along with being second in the AL in home runs, seventh in runs scored, second in walks, and eighth in RBI. He is no slouch in the field either as he leads all MLB right fielders in UZR.

Luis Severino (Second ASG Selection)
The Yankees’ ace will also be representing the Yankees for the second consecutive season. Severino has a legitimate chance to start the game as his stats line up with any pitcher in the AL. He is sixth in strikeouts, second in WAR, first in wins, and first in ERA+. Aaron Boone said earlier in the week that he hopes Severino gets to pitch an inning in the game.

Aroldis Chapman (Fifth ASG Selection)
The Yankees’ closer has completed a full 180 from last season’s struggles and has been rewarded with his fifth All-Star Game selection, his first as a Yankee and first since 2015. Chapman has posted phenomenal numbers as his ERA sits at 1.42 and he is third in the AL in saves. He has an incredible strikeout rate of 15.6 K/9 and is the type of pitcher fans want to see in DC. Chapman did leave Sunday’s game with a knee tendonitis reoccurrence, so it is unclear if Yankee fans will get to see their closer take the mound in DC.

Gleyber Torres (First ASG Selection)
The Yankees’ rookie second baseman continues his marvelous start to his career by being selected to his first All-Star Game at the age of 21. His numbers along with his knack for hitting in the clutch make him a more than worthy member of the AL Sqaud. Torres has a 2.2 WAR and .905 OPS in only 63 games. Torres likely will not play, however, as he is nursing a hip injury. Nevertheless, the Yankees’ young stud is more than worthy of having his first All-Star experience in his inaugural season.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George. No team in baseball history has a story quite like the Yankees. 27 times they’ve found baseball Nirvana which is 16 more than the next closest team (Cardinals). 40 times have the Yankees won the American League, and that is also a major league record. The franchise won four straight championships from 1936-1939 and five straight from 1949-1953, a task no other team has ever accomplished. With all this sustained success, the team has seen some of the greatest players in league history proudly call the Bronx home.
