Long ball and a little luck propel Yankees past Indians 5-4

CC Sabathia took the mound tonight to act in his stopper role after the Yankees lost a tough game yesterday. While he got run support early, Sabathia blew the lead in the sixth inning due to some miscues in the field. However, Austin Romine’s little league home run and the bullpen secured the Yankees a victory in the third game of this four-game set.

Didi Gregorius got the Yankees going in the first with a three-run home run, his 17th of the season. Jose Ramirez got one back for the Indians in their half of the inning as he smashed his league leading 29th homer of the season. The Indians were able to manufacture another one back in their half of the second inning as Michael Brantley hit an RBI groundout.

In the sixth inning, Aaron Boone was ejected for the second time this season as he was heated after a HBP was called a strike on Giancarlo Stanton. His players picked him up as Greg Bird continued his hot streak. He muscled his eighth home run of the season to give the Yankees a two-run lead and give CC some breathing room.

Sabathia looked good today, but ran into a bad situation in the sixth inning. The Yankees decided to stick with Sabathia versus the southpaw-killer, Brandon Guyer, and the decision did not work out. He smacked a grounder to Andujar, who made a good stop, but was unable to secure the out. A run scored, Bird’s throw home that hit off Austin Romine’s glove allowed a second run to score, and the game was tied. Sabathia’s night was over.

The bullpen combination of David Robertson, Dellin Betances, and Aroldis Chapman limited the Indians to only two baserunners for the remainder of the game. The Yankees’ game-winning run scored off the bat of Austin Romine. In the seventh inning, he sliced a double into right field that was misplayed by Brandon Guyer. The throw to third was then overthrown and rolled into the dugout allowing Romine to score. The score stayed 5-4 and the Yankees picked up their 62nd win of the season.

What’s next?
The Yankees will go for the series win tomorrow as they take on the Tribe at 1:10 pm ET. Trevor Bauer will square off against Masahiro Tanaka.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
