Homers by Hicks, Higgy, and Stanton power Yankees past Braves in 8-5 win

In a lineup initially missing rookie phenom Gleyber Torres, the Yankees were able to even up the series with a suspenseful 8-5 win against Atlanta. Despite a short performance from German and an exhausted bullpen, the Bombers took game two on a beautiful Bronx night.

The action got started early in the Bronx with a two-run homer from Aaron Hicks, who now has nine home runs in his last 17 games. In the bottom of the second, Kyle Higashioka earned his second Major League hit as well as his second career HR with a long fly ball to left. 

Brandon Drury collected an RBI after being walked with the bases loaded, which was the final strike for Braves’ starter Sean Newcomb. The potential All-Star was replaced after a meager 2.2 innings by Luke Jackson. Higashioka walked to earn his third career RBI, but Neil Walker’s bad luck continued as he sharply lined out to first for what could have been a multiple-run hit. Instead, the inning was over. In the bottom of the fourth, Brett Gardner scored on a wild pitch by Jackson to make it 6-0.  

Domingo German needed a long outing in this game as just about the entire bullpen was used last night, but he was removed after 4.1 innings. Things got messy for German in the fifth as he gave up four straight hits with one out. Two home runs by Ender Inciarte and Ozzie Albies cut the Yankees’ lead in half. A.J. Cole pitched a clean 1.2 innings, but Adam Warren surrendered a two-run bomb to Nick Markakis. Just like that, the Yanks’ lead was cut to one run.

Chasen Shreve was the only unused man left in the bullpen from the previous night, making for a tense eighth inning. Shreve narrowly escaped blowing the lead, but he got the job done and prevented himself from another night of condemnation by Yankee fans. Giancarlo Stanton came through with a two-run homer, extending the lead to 8-5 late in the game. With a comfortable lead, Aroldis Chapman closed out the game to give the Yankees their 55th win.  

What’s Next? 
The series finale on this Fourth of July will feature CC Sabathia facing off against Julio Teheran. Sabathia is looking to add another win to his 5-3 record, where he has maintained an impressive 3.02 ERA. In his last outing, Teheran pitched six shutout innings. The game is scheduled to start at 1:05 PM ET on YES.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George. Sure little rumors have serviced here or there about them maybe pursuing Zach Greinke who has recently opted out of his contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but that move reeks of the move CC Sabathia pulled in opting out of his contract with the Yankees a few years back to simply restructure his contract and make a better payday.   However, instances like CC Sabathia and Masahiro Tanaka are why I believe the Yankees aren’t going to shell out big money and a long term contract for a big name starter this year. No team in baseball history has a story quite like the Yankees. 27 times they’ve found baseball Nirvana which is 16 more than the next closest team (Cardinals). 40 times have the Yankees won the American League, and that is also a major league record.
