Masahiro Tanaka nearing a return to the Yankees' rotation

After spending time on the DL with two hamstring injuries, Yankees RHP Masahiro Tanaka is expected to make a rehab start in Triple A this week with Scranton before possibly returning to the rotation in the Yankees’ upcoming series against Baltimore, as Brian Cashman said Tanaka returning to face Baltimore is “the best case scenario”. Tanaka’s return will mark the end of a rookie’s rotation spot, as Tanaka will replace one of either Jonathan Loaisiga or Domingo German.

In Loaisiga’s three starts, he has pitched fourteen innings while allowing three runs and striking out eighteen. As for German, in his nine starts this season, he has pitched 49 innings while allowing 32 runs and striking out 56. Upon returning to the rotation in place of one of these two rookies, Tanaka will look to continue to be the solid rotation piece he was prior to injury. Through his thirteen starts this season, Tanaka is 7-2 with a 4.58 ERA, has struck out 73 batters, and has issued nineteen walks. Having his first start upon returning against Baltimore would be optimal for Tanaka, as he’d return against one of the worst teams in the American League and not face immediate pressure to shut down an explosive offense.
