Big First Inning Fuels Yanks over Jays as Sevy Gets Win Number 14
The opening game in this series on Friday was plagued
by another poor Sonny Gray performance, yet the Yanks had reason for optimism
on Saturday, as their ace Luis Severino was on the hill. The optimism was well
deserved, as Severino added to his MLB league lead in wins, picking up number
14 and riding a big performance by the offense as the Yanks took this one 8-5.
The game began with a bang, as Brett Gardner
and Aaron Judge went back-to-back to start off the game, putting Blue Jay
starter and possible future Yankee J.A Happ on the ropes, as many viewed this
as an unofficial audition for his possible new team. However, Happ would
continue to pitch subpar, completely losing the strike zone and would not even
make it out of the third inning. Brandon Drury added in on the fun in the
opening frame and ripped a two-run double to give the Yankees four first inning
runs.
Severino took the mound with a commanding lead,
yet did not pitch up to his usual standards. Sevy was having command issues throughout this
game and uncharacteristically gave up a two run home run to Kevin Pillar in the
second. Sevy would settle down enough to keep the Yanks ahead Happ left the
game in the third, which did not matter to Gardy as he drove home two more with
his triple against the new Jays reliever. Gardner would score later in the
inning on a passed ball to make it 6-2 Yanks.
Severino went five innings, and was relieved by
Jonathan Holder, D- Rob, Betances, Chapman, and Chasen Shreve; a busy day for
the bullpen to say the least. Aaron Hicks and Chapman were both removed from the
game prematurely, as Hicks had cramping in his leg while Chappy had a similar
issue: let knee tendinitis. Aaron Boone stated after the game that neither injury
would require further testing, and both players should be good to go. The game ended
with Shreve on the mound, who gave up his eighth home run of the year, before finishing
off the 8-5 Yankees win.
