Who Slots in Following the Departure of Dellin Betances?

Image
Following an injury-riddled season in 2019 where fans saw just one outing from 6’8” right-hander Dellin Betances, Yankees nation caught a case of the Christmas blues when word broke that he had signed a one-year deal that would send him across the East River to play in Queens. As a result of suffering a bone spur injury behind his right shoulder before Opening Day, along with tearing his Achilles tendon in his return on September 15, Betances missed virtually the entire season. Though the Yankees bullpen performed at an elite level in 2019 despite Betances’ absence, he is still one of the best relievers in baseball when healthy. Brad Penner / USA Today Sports

Yankees agree to terms with all nine arbitration-eligible players

Image
On Friday afternoon, the New York Yankees agreed to terms with all nine of their arbitration eligible players on one-year contracts for the 2020 season.  This marks the third season in a row the Yankees will have avoided going to arbitration hearings with any of their players.  The team was set to go to a hearing with RHP Luis Severino last winter, but instead agreed to a four-year, $40 million contract before the hearing date.   Photo Credit: Abbie Parr/Getty Images

Yanks sign RHP Trevor Rosenthal to minor-league deal

Image
The Yankees have signed right-handed reliever Trevor Rosenthal, Andersen Pickard of Fan Source Network has reported. The agreement is a minor-league deal and the move should be seen as nothing more than a depth signing, as relievers Dellin Betances, Jonathan Holder, and others still remain on the Injured List. Rosenthal is the latest reliever the Yanks have acquired in attempting to get through the month of August. Photo Credit: Tony Gutierrez/AP

Yankees send Voit, Hale to IL

As we approach the Trade Deadline this afternoon, the Yankees have placed 1B Luke Voit and RHP David Hale on the 10-day IL, calling up INF Breyvic Valera and RHP Jonathan Holder to take their spots. Photo Credit: Canadian Press

The struggles of Cessa, Holder and what it might mean for Cameron Maybin

Image
Coming into the season, the Yankees’ bullpen was expected to be one of the best relief groups ever assembled. For the most part, that has been true. Their top four options (Chapman, Ottavino, Britton and Kahnle) have all been elite. However, there are two underachievers that Brian Cashman and co. need to address quickly: Luis Cessa and Jonathan Holder. With Aaron Judge’s impending return, and a true roster crunch on New York’s hands, the Yankees’ management team should look to remove one of these two from their roster rather than the red-hot Cameron Maybin. Yankees sweep day-night double header with game 2 win in KC

Image
In game two of the day-night double header, the Yankees found a way to attack and score runs early, propelling the team to their second victory of the day. Chad Green started the night on the mound against KC’s Jorge Lopez. Neither starters lasted long, yet it didn’t matter for New York as the relievers came through and got the job done.  Photo Credit: Ed Zurga/Getty Images

Bombers drop chance for AL East lead, lose 7-2 to Tampa

Image
After battling for a big win last night, the Yankees looked to CC Sabathia to not only clinch a series win but to take first place in the division as well. The Rays hoping to hold their spot atop the AL East went with the opener, Ryne Stanek. After going down early in this game, the Yankees were able to strike back to tie the game in the top of the sixth. However, a messy bottom half cost them that chance to control their division this weekend, losing 7-2 to Tampa. Getty Images It was a rocky start for Sabathia as he let up two early solo home runs in the second and third innings to Avisail Garcia and Yandy Diaz respectively. Luckily, CC was able to settle down limiting the damage to those two runs in his start. @raysbaseball In the fifth, Gleyber Torres continued his hot streak with his second hit of the day, bringing his average to over .330 in his last 28 at-bats. Another “red hot” Baby Bomber, Clint Frazier (18 RBI) laced a double off the wall in left field to drive ...

Yankees strike early and cruise to a win over Mariners

Image
After banking a nice, weekend series win against the Minnesota Twins, the Yankees looked to continue their winning ways against longtime nemesis Felix Hernandez. While Felix has dominated the Yankees countless times over the years, the story was quite different in this one. With more healthy reinforcements arriving in the form of Clint Frazier, the Yankees wasted no time jumping on King Felix en route to a 7 – 3 win Credit: Elsa/Getty Images

Sanchez lifts Yanks to 6-3 win over Minnesota after Paxton exits early

Back home for the first time in 12 days, the Yankees took down the Twins, 6-3, for their first win over a team with a winning record all season. New York is now 1-5 against squads that are above .500, and 9-7 in the Bronx in 2019. Photo Credit: AP Photo/Frank Franklin II

CC Records 3,000th Strikeout in Yankees' 3-1 Loss to Diamondbacks

CC records his 3000th career strikeout! pic.twitter.com/YuFfCS9enN — Bronx Bomber Ball (@BronxBomberBall) May 1, 2019 Carsten Charles Sabathia became just the 17 th  pitcher, and third lefty, in MLB history to record 3,000 career strikeouts in the Yankees' 3-1 defeat to the Diamondbacks on Tuesday evening.  The Big Man accomplished the feat in the second inning after striking out David Peralta, Christian Walker, and finally John Ryan Murphy for strikeout #3,000.  Sabathia finished with a final line of 5.1 innings, allowing two earned runs, and striking out five.  He was outdueled by Zack Greinke though, who dominated the Yankees lineup for 7.2 innings and allowed only one run.    Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images

Corner not turned: Yankees drop series opener to Royals, 6-1

Image
Riding high after last night’s dramatic win over Boston, the Yankees failed to carry that momentum into tonight’s series opener with the Royals, falling 6-1 to Kansas City. With the loss, New York is now a combined 3-7 at home against projected American League cellar dwellers Baltimore, Detroit, Chicago and Kansas City.  Photo Credit: Julio Cortez/AP Photo

Yankees make too many mistakes in 6-3 loss to Astros

Image
The Yankees looked to rebound from their ugly loss in game one of their series against the Astros. Even though they did lead two different times, but weren’t able to hold on to it. The bullpen wasn’t good enough yet again, the defense wasn’t sound, and they only managed to get five hits. At the end of the day there was a very similar feel to the first game.  Photo Credit: AP Photo/Eric Christian Smith

Judge homers twice, Frazier comes up clutch as Yanks win 6-4 over O's

Image
It took some late heroics, but the Yankees were able to pull out a 6-4 win over the Orioles on Saturday night.  After stumbling through the middle innings, hampered by sloppy play and questionable bullpen management, the Yankees found themselves down by a run to the Orioles.  Clint Frazier played the role of hero in this one, stepping to the plate with two men on.  Facing Miguel Castro, Frazier blasted a clutch three-run homer to give the Yanks a two-run lead which they would not relinquish.

Pinstripe Preview: Bullpen

Image
An electric bullpen. It’s something that Yankees fans have grown accustomed to over the last few years. Every season since 2014, the team has ranked top two in MLB in bullpen wins above replacement (WAR). In addition, the 2018 Yankees had the highest bullpen WAR (9.7) in league history. Need more proof? New York’s relief corps finished number one in strikeouts per nine innings (K/9) in all five of those campaigns. It’s no secret that the Yanks have had the back-end of games covered for a while, and this year’s group could be the best yet. Photo Credit: WFAN.com

Bullpen Day Thrives, Yanks top Rays 4-1

Image
Entering the last week of the regular season the Yankees opened a four-game set Monday night in the always dreaded trip to face the Tampa Bay Rays. The Yankees came into tonight sitting one and a half games (two in the loss column) above the Oakland A’s for home field advantage in the AL Wild Card game. Aaron Boone decided to go with a “bullpen day” tonight instead of giving the ball to a typical starter.

Severino has shortest start of year, Yankees blown out by A’s 8-

Image
The night after J.A. Happ made a great case to be the Wild Card Game starter against presumably the Oakland A’s, Luis Severino did himself the exact opposite. Sevy continued his inconsistent play, lasting just 2.2 innings and giving up 6 runs (5 earned) on 6 hits with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts. Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images

Behind 7 strong from Tanaka, HR from Torres, Yankees defeat Detroit 2-1

Behind seven strong innings from Masahiro Tanaka and a fifth inning blast from  Gleyber  Torres, the Yankees took the third game in their  four-game  set with the Tigers yesterday by the count of 2-1.  This game featured the Yankees debut of Andrew McCutchen (0-3, 2K, HBP) and the return of Gary Sanchez.   Photo Credit: Bill Kostroun/AP Photo

Cessa, Yanks Fall Flat to Tampa 6-1

Image
Wednesday night in the Bronx was not a good time to be in a Yankee uniform, as the Rays jumped on the Yanks early and defeated them 6-1. In a game that was started by the infamous Luis Cessa, the Yanks just never seemed to get things going, especially after leaving the base loaded early in the game. The loss kept the Yanks an even .500 on the year against Tampa, and it marked the seventh loss in the last nine games to Tampa. The lone run of the game for the Yanks came in the second inning, as Miguel Andujar lined a ball into the left field seats for his 19th homer of the season to tie the game at one. The Yanks would immediately give up this lead, however the fourth inning saw the Yanks knock out Tampas starter and have the bases loaded with one out. With the bases juiced, Romine struck out and Toe was originally ruled safe on an infield single but was shortly ruled out after replay showed he did not beat the throw. The Yanks wasted their best opportunity of the night and it came...

Yankees annihilated by Red Sox in ugliest loss of the season, 15-7

Image
This four-game set against the Red Sox at Fenway Park is the most important series of 2018 thus far. The gap between first and second place in the AL East seems to be widening each day, so it didn’t help that the Yankees suffered a devastating, awful 15-7 loss tonight. The Red Sox offense exploded for 19 hits, and none of the Yankees’ pitchers, including CC Sabathia, could stop them. The score may as well have been 25-4.   AP Photo/Michael Dwyer
