Series Preview: New York Yankees vs Boston Red Sox (5/30-6/2)

Image
The Rivalry is back on in the Bronx, as the Red Sox come to town to take on the Yankees in a four-game set. The Bombers shut down the San Diego Padres Wednesday en route to their eighth consecutive series win, and they’ll look to ride that momentum into a very important series this weekend. While the Rays enter the day just a game out of first place in the AL East, they have a three-game set with the MLB-best Minnesota Twins on tap - it’s crucial the Yanks put away the Sox and begin to pull away from a surging Tampa team. The defending champions have not had it easy to start the year. They enter play just a game over .500, already 7.5 games back in the division race. Last month the Yankees swept a quick two-game set against the Sox - if the bats can take advantage of an unstable pitching staff (16th ranked 4.43 team ERA), they shouldn’t have an issue putting away their bitter rivals yet again. Torres shines as Yankees sweep twin bill from Orioles

Image
Playing their first double-header of the 2019 season, the Yankees took care of business against the last-place Orioles, taking both games thanks to solid pitching and a power display on offense. The two wins put the Yanks at a season-best 26-16, just two games worse than the team’s 28-14 mark through 42 games last year. Photo Credit: Frank Franklin II/AP Photo

Series Preview: Minnesota Twins vs New York Yankees (5/3-5/5)

Image
The New York Yankees are finally returning home after a nine-game road trip that saw them go 6-3.  If you told a Yankee fan they would finish their West Coast stint with a 6-3 record before the trip, they would have been satisfied.  However, after starting 6-1 and dropping the last two games to Arizona by a combined three runs, it feels as if they left a win or two on the table.  Nonetheless, the Yankees currently have a 17-13 record and are just 2.5 games behind the AL East leading Tampa Bay Rays. The Yankees start their seven-game home stand with a three-game set against the Minnesota Twins.  The AL Central leading Twins come into this series with a 19-10 record after just completing a series win over the Houston Astros.  Minnesota is 6-1 over their last seven games. They are getting it done on both sides of the ball as they are in the top-13 in the majors in both runs scored and runs against.  This is the first of two t...

Series Preview: Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees (4/16-4/17)

Image
The Rivalry is back, and the 2019 edition begins with both teams in different positions than they had hoped for. The Yankees and Red Sox have both struggled so far this season, but it is still likely the AL East will come down to these two at the end of the year making these two games extremely important. The Yankees come into this series losing five of their last six after dropping a series to the lowly Chicago White Sox. This team desperately needs a spark that the dramatics of this great rivalry might provide.   Photo Credit: CBS

Judge homers twice, Frazier comes up clutch as Yanks win 6-4 over O's

Image
It took some late heroics, but the Yankees were able to pull out a 6-4 win over the Orioles on Saturday night.  After stumbling through the middle innings, hampered by sloppy play and questionable bullpen management, the Yankees found themselves down by a run to the Orioles.  Clint Frazier played the role of hero in this one, stepping to the plate with two men on.  Facing Miguel Castro, Frazier blasted a clutch three-run homer to give the Yanks a two-run lead which they would not relinquish.

Yankees agree to deal with J.A. Happ

Image
Per Mark Feinsand, the Yankees have an agreement to bring back LHP J.A. Happ. The deal is for two years guaranteed with a vesting option for a third year. It will guarantee Happ $34M over the first two years , but that number could increase if a buyout is included on the third year option.  Credit: Julie Jacobson/AP Photo

Predicting the Wild Card game roster

Image
Yankees fans, the postseason is finally upon us. The 162-game journey that is the Major League Baseball regular season has come to a close, and the Bronx Bombers won 100 games for the first time since 2009. While the season had its ups-and-downs, it’s remarkable that this team found a way to win that many contests considering the injuries they faced. Unfortunately, the Boston Red Sox had an historic 108-win season, so New York will be hosting the Wild Card game for the second straight year, and the third time in four years. With that comes some difficult roster decisions, namely who the starting pitcher will be, who to keep in the bullpen and which position players to keep on the bench. This article is a prediction of the Yankees' 25-man roster, starting pitcher and starting lineup for Wednesday’s game against the Athletics. I have predicted the team will keep 14 position players and 11 pitchers. Last year, Joe Girardi opted for 15 position players and 10 pitchers. For ...

The case for J.A. Happ to pitch the A.L. Wild Card game

The team with “plenty of time” has plenty to worry about heading into the season’s final stretch of games

Image
I get it. The Yankees are a 90-win team and only need to go 10-6 in their last 16 games to win 100 games, a feat accomplished just over 100 times since 1892. There are 20+ fanbases in the sport that have it worse off than the Yankees, and it is a very feasible argument that if it wasn’t for the Red Sox historic success, the skepticism surrounding the Bronx Bombers would be minimal. Series Preview: New York Yankees vs. Oakland Athletics (9/3-9/5)

Image
Series Preview: New York Yankees vs Oakland Athletics (9-3/9-5)                      There’s no Labor Day rest for the Yankees (and no rest for the fans, let’s get ready for a few bleary-eyed weekday mornings after two games with 10pm starts), as they head over to the West Coast to face the Oakland Athletics, following a seven-game home stand. Only rest for Aaron Boone, who will be fresh off his one-game suspension after being ejected on August 31st. The Yankees and the Athletics met only once over the course of the 2018 season so far, and this meeting is far more important than the three-game series that the two teams met for in May. The series was described by YES’ own Michael Kay, during the broadcast of the September 2nd game versus the Tigers, as one of the “biggest of the year.” It’s a potential preview of the A.L. Wild Card Game, with the Yankees 7.5 games behind th...

Happ stifles former team, offense explodes again, in 10-2 win

Image
On a cool, cloudy afternoon in The Bronx, the Yanks dominated the Blue Jays, 10-2, to close out a three-game sweep of their divisional foe. After a rough start to the week, the Yankees got back on track this weekend with the sweep of Toronto. In doing so, they closed out their home stand with a 4-3 record. Photo Credit: Noah K. Happ strong in his return, Bombers blast five HRs in 7-3 win over Texas

Image
Fresh off a series sweep in Chicago earlier this  week, the Yankees returned home to kick off a crucial 11 game homestand.  The  Rangers came into this game averaging seven runs per game since the  All-Star  Break, the best in all of baseball.  J.A. Happ made his first start since coming back from the now infamous Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease. It would be Happ’s night as he had the upper hand in this matchup. The Yankees got six strong from Happ and five long balls from the offense en route to a 7-3 victory.     Photo Credit: Al Bello/Getty Images

Happ dazzles in debut as Yanks down Royals 6-3

Image
In front of a sellout crowd at Yankee Stadium, J.A. Happ delivered an impressive performance in his Yankees debut to lead his new team to a 6-3 victory and series win over the Royals. With the win, New York is once again a season-high 30 games over .500 at 68-38, but still trail the red-hot Boston Red Sox by 5.5 games in the AL East. Photo Credit: Mike Strobe/Getty Images

Reacting to the Yankees' trades of Zach Britton, J.A. Happ

Image
In a span of 48 hours earlier this week, Yankees' General Manager Brian Cashman pulled off two trades to bolster both the starting rotation and bullpen as the Yankees hit the dog days of summer, still within striking distance of Boston for the AL East crown.  New York has one of the stronger lineups in baseball and few spots for obvious upgrades, so Cashman chose to focus on the other side of the ball.   Photo Credit: Frank Franklin/AP Photo

In what has turned out to be a busy week for the Yankees and Brian Cashman, they have acquired left-hander J.A. Happ from the Toronto Blue Jays, as confirmed by Jon Heyman. The Blue Jays will receive IF Brandon Drury and OF Billy McKinney in return. Photo Credit: AP

Series Preview: New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays (7/6-7/8)

Image
After taking two out of three from the Atlanta Braves earlier this week, the Yankees now head north of the border for a three-game weekend series against the Blue Jays in Toronto. This is the Yanks third, and final, trip to the Rogers Centre this season, where they are 4-2 so far. Entering play Friday, the Yankees are 56-28 and one game behind the Red Sox in the AL East. Meanwhile, Toronto, sitting at 40-46 and 18 games back of Boston, is likely to be a seller at the trade deadline later this month. This series starts a stretch of 43 out of 51 games against teams below .500 for the Yankees. Photo Credit: Frank Franklin II/AP Photo Game One: Friday, July 6th at 7:07pm on YES Sonny Gray (5-6, 5.44 ERA) vs. Sam Gaviglio (2-2, 3.97 ERA) Last time out, Sonny Gray produced his worst start as a Yankee. In 2.1 innings against Boston last Saturday, Gray allowed six runs on seven hits. After that miserable effort, the 28-year-old righty now owns an 8.25 ERA, 2.00 WHIP and e...
