Yankees agree to deal with J.A. Happ
Per Mark Feinsand, the Yankees
have an agreement to bring back LHP J.A. Happ. The deal is for two years guaranteed with a vesting option for a third year. It will guarantee Happ $34M over the first two years, but that number could increase if a buyout is included on the third year option.
Happ was very good down the stretch after coming over from the Toronto Blue Jays, making 11 starts and going 7-0 with a 2.69 ERA in 63.2 IP. Unfortunately, the success did not carry over into the playoffs, where he made one start against the Boston Red Sox and lasted just two innings. Overall for 2018, Happ pitched to a 17-6 record with a 3.65 ERA in 177.2 IP and 31 starts

The third year is
something the Yankees seemed hesitant to include, but good on Brian Cashman for being able to work it out. While it may be a little scary to have him
locked in until his age 38 season, Happ has been posting pretty consistent
numbers the last several years and hasn’t been relying on overpowering hitters
for some time now. While there is always the danger of older players falling
off the cliff, Happ is a solid option and didn’t seem at all phased by the
pressure of playing in New York. This is probably an indication that Cashman isn't optimistic about trading for another starter right now but we'll have to wait and see.
