2018 Pinstripe Preview: Ronald Torreyes
There
are many talented young players on this Yankees team. One guy that gets
overlooked is Ronald Torreyes. He may not be on the same level or even near the
same level as other young guys such as Aaron Judge or Gary Sanchez, but Torreyes
is certainly still a valuable player to the Yankees.
He
has done very well in pinstripes as a utility guy. The fact that he plays many
infield positions gives Aaron Boone a lot of flexibility when he wants to give
guys off or in the case of an injury. Torreyes is also listed as the Yankees’
emergency catcher although we’ll likely never be blessed with the sight of
that.
The 26-year-old began his career in 2015. Torreyes played just eight games with the
Dodgers before being traded to the Yankees following the season.
He has
proven to be an asset. Although he has pretty much no power, Torreyes
consistently puts the bat on the ball. When you do that, eventually the ball
will find holes.
The 5’8" infielder hit .258 in 72 games in 2016. His playing time increased slightly in 2017 as did his numbers. His average rose to .292 in 108 games
last season. However, in 188 career games, he has just four home runs and 49
RBIs.
His
numbers obviously won’t blow you away, but they’re not terrible either. When you
combine his ability to play multiple positions along with his ability to make
contact, he becomes a more appealing option. For those reasons, he should
see a fair amount of playing time.
Torreyes
also contributes to the team’s great chemistry. Remember everyone’s favorite
late night show? The TOE-night show took place in the dugout usually
after a fellow teammate hit a homer. The players, as well as the fans, seemed to
love it.
Unfortunately
for Torreyes, it may be more difficult for him to find playing time especially
once Greg Bird returns from injury. After all, the Yankees added Brandon Drury
and Neil Walker. They also have Miguel Andujar and Gleyber Torres just waiting
to get the call. Until then though, Ronald Torreyes remains an important piece
for the Yankees.
