Jacoby Ellsbury expected to begin season on DL

Yankees' manager Aaron Boone announced this afternoon that Jacoby Ellsbury is expected to begin the 2018 season on the disabled list.  Ellsbury has been out since early March with an oblique strain. To add insult to injury, Ellsbury missed action yesterday with what was diagnosed as a sore throat and a fever.

As a result of Ellsbury's absence on the Yankees' Opening Day 25-man roster, Boone and his staff are considering using a 13-man pitching staff, rather than adding another position player to the bench.  With the Yankees having just three off days all of April, the move makes sense.
Potential additions to the New York bullpen include Luis Cessa and Domingo German in a swingman role, as well as right handers Ben Heller and Jonathan Holder who have both impressed in camp this spring.

In the event New York does carry 13 pitchers, leaving just four open bench spots, expect those seats to be occupied by Austin Romine, Tyler Wade, Ronald Torreyes and Tyler Austin.

The Yankees hope to get Ellsbury into some sim games this week, but his return to the lineup is undetermined for now. It's possible he might not see pinstripes until late April.
